England’s Euro 2022 victory looks to have helped boost the interest in the women’s game in football with a bumper crowd already in place for the Lioness’ recently-announced friendly game.
Over 65,000 tickets have now been sold for the European Champions’ game against the reigning World Champions, the USA.
It’s a remarkable change in the fortunes of women’s football in the UK compared to England’s 2-1 victory at home over the Stars and Stripes in a friendly game back in 2011.
That night England won 2-1 with goals from Jess Clarke and Rachel Yankey (Megan Rapinoe scored for the visitors). But instead of playing at Wembley, the Lionesses played in front of just 5,801 fans at the more modest surroundings of Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road stadium.
Now, after 17.4 million people watched the Lionesses’ final victory over Germany on the BBC things are looking far more promising for the future.
There’s still about a third of the tickets left to sell and it seems like it’s just a matter of time before the England women’s team play in front of a packed Wembley Stadium.
YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING 🤩
