With no games to be played in Britain this weekend the football fan’s meticulously-scheduled weekend has undergone some understandable changes.

However, there is still plenty of football from around the continent to fill your boots with. Playmaker takes a look at some of the key games from around Europe this weekend...

      RB Leipzig v Dortmund

Leipzig made the drastic decision to sack Domenico Tedesco this week following a 4-0 hammering by Eintracht Frankfurt and then a 4-1 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Former Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose is now the man in charge and he doesn’t get an easy start.

12th-placed Leipzig host Borussia Dortmund today, who are in second place behind league-leaders SC Freiburg. Rose’s former club had a far better Champions League match week after having comfortably dispatched FC København with a 3-0 win.

Leipzig need some points on the board but it’s going to be very difficult.

      Internazionale v Torino

Inter played well against Bayern midweek but still lost 2-0 at home to the German side. It rounds out a couple of miserable weeks for Simone Inzaghi who had to deal with derby day defeat to AC Milan last weekend as well as a loss to former club Lazio.

That slow start has Inter eight in Serie A in what is expected to be a very open title race.

Interestingly, Inter are currently behind fifth-placed Torino. Only Atalanta, who currently top the Italian league, have managed to defeat Torino this season. Of course, Il Toro are now living in a post-Belotti era but have had a promising start to the season even if they’ve had a relatively easy run until now.

      Marseille v Lille

Although Marseille were cheered on by Joey Barton in the away end against Spurs, Chancel Mbemba’s sending-off led to a 2-0 defeat. That was Igor Tudor’s first defeat of the season with Marseille currently undefeated in the league.

Lille’s start hasn’t been quite as impressive, especially that 7-1 thrashing they received at the hands of PSG back in August. Still, Lille are sixth in the league and haven’t had any midweek European distraction that might give them the edge over their opponents.

      Real Betis v Villarreal

Real Betis had a perfect record in La Liga until last weekend when they fell to defeat away to Real Madrid. That’s no great shame, Manuel Pellegrini are still punching well above their weight while enjoying their city rivals Sevilla struggle near the relegation zone.

Betis currently sit fourth in La Liga, just one point behind Villarreal. Unai Emery’s team had to work really hard against Lech Poznan in the Conference League on Thursday with Francis Coquelin scoring an 89th-minute winner.

Domestically, the Yellow Submarine are undefeated after four games including a 2-0 win away to Atlético Madrid last month. This could be a key game in what is likely to be the race for third place when, eventually, Real Madrid and Barcelona pull away from the pack.

      Feyenoord v Sparta

It’s the first Rotterdam derby of the season and it’s been a happy hunting ground for Feyenoord in recent years. When these teams faced off at De Kuip last season it was an enjoyable 4-0 win for the home team.

Arne Slot’s team staged a late comeback away to Lazio in the Europa League on Thursday after going 4-0 down but could only reduce the deficit to 4-2 in the end. Domestically though, Feyenoord remain undefeated having won four and drawn one of their first five fixtures which has them in second place in the Eredivisie behind Ajax.

City rivals Sparta are seventh in the league having suffered two defeats so far this season against Ajax and AZ. Having finished 14th in the league last year there was no trip to Italy for the team last week giving them extra time to prepare for this big game.

They’ll need it. Sparta haven’t managed a win against Feyenoord since 2017 and haven’t won away from home since 2000. It’s going to be tough for Maurice Steijn’s side on Sunday.
