Hwang Hee-chan's late winner sends Korea to last 16

A stoppage-time winner from Wolves' Hwang Hee-Chan sent South Korea into the last 16 of the World Cup after a superb  2-1 comeback win over Portugal at Education City Stadium.

Action: With qualification in the bag, Fernando Santos gave an opportunity to other players and they seemed to take it as the first goal was created by two players, who hadn't played a single minute in the World Cup yet.

In the fifth minute, Diogo Dalot picked up a long ball from Pepe and made a clever run forward on the right side, slipping a pass to Ricardo Horta, who fired home from close range to score his first goal at a major tournament.

Needing to win, the South Koreans pressed to get back in the game quickly and they nearly did through a corner, but the goal was ruled off for offside.

Again from a corner and after dreadful defending from the Portuguese defence, Paulo Bento's side levelled the game through Kim Young-Gwon, who turned home after the ball bounced off Cristiano Ronaldo.

Both nations had chances to score in the remaining minutes of the first period but failed to register more goals.

Knowing the result in the other game at half time, which confirmed first place in the group, the Portuguese relaxed in the second half, while the Koreans kept the same intensity.

Portugal dominated possession but didn't create clear chances, while the Taegeuk Warriors became even more dangerous throughout the second period.

In stoppage time, the Portuguese had a corner, South Korea recovered the ball and set Son Heung-min loose on a a counter-attack. The Spurs forward played a perfect through ball on the edge of the box to Hwang Hee-chan, who made no mistake with only Diogo Costa to beat.

In the end, South Korea celebrated as this win put them through to the next round.

Big Picture: The result meant South Korea are into the last 16 and Uruguay were dumped out of the group stages despite beating Ghana 2-0 in the other Group H.

Both nations have the same goal difference, but the Asians advance on goals scored as they netted four to Uruguay's two.

Portugal secured first place in the group despite the defeat. Both nations will now wait for the 7pm games to know who their opponents will be, but the Portuguese players know they will have an extra day of rest as they will play on Tuesday evening, while the South Koreans will play Monday evening.

Moment of the match: Hwang Hee-chan's late goal, which sent their nation to the knock-outs, will be forever remembered in South Korea and he today probably became a legend in his country.

Reaction: Fernando Santos on South Korea's second goal: "That can't happen. The same thing happened against Serbia [in the qualifiers]. Players know that can't happen. Maybe there was anxiety of wanting to score, but we'll have to see and work that now".
