Switzerland edge past Serbia to reach Last 16

Switzerland booked a place in the Round of 16 after a fantastic 3-2 win over Serbia at the Stadium 974.

Action: Switzerland went in front with 20 minutes played after Xherdan Shaqiri's deflected shot gave no chance to goalkeeper Milinkovic-Savic.

The celebrations only lasted seven minutes as two quick goals from Serbia turned the game around.

First, Dusan Tadic was given too much space and whipped in a lovely ball for Aleksandar Mitrovic, who head home and levelled the match.

Just eight minutes later, Tadic, again, picked up a loose ball and slipped through to Dusan Vlahovic, who took advantage of Remo Freuler's poorly timed slip to coolly find the bottom right corner and make 2-1 for Serbia.

Murat Yakin's men fought their way back into the game just before the break with Silvan Widmer finding Breel Embolo at the far post with a low cross from the right, leaving Monaco forward with the simplest of finishes to level the score again.

Nottingham Forest's Remo Freuler put the Red Crosses back in front shortly after the break, with Ruben Vargas cleverly flicked on a ball to Remu Freuler who smashed it home.

Serbia started to play more direct football but it didn't work as as Switzerland held firm to claim three vital points.

Big Picture: The win sealed second place in the group for the Nati with six points, level with group winners Brazil, but behind on goal difference.

Switzerland will now face Portugal on Tuesday to fight for a place in the quarter-finals.
