Chelsea sign Enzo Fernandez for a British record deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a British record fee of £106.5m (€121m).

In a released statement from the Portuguese club, it reads: "Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Futebol, SAD reports that it has reached an agreement with Chelsea FC for the sale of all the rights of the player Enzo Fernández, for an amount of €121,000,000 [one hundred and twenty-one million euros]."

After various attempts to sign the World Cup winner, Chelsea have finally triggered Fernandez's release clause.

Enzo will fly to London on tomorrow (February 1) and will sign a whopping eight-year contract with Graham Potter's side until 2031.

The deal eclipses the £100m Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish in 2021.

The 22-year-old, who only joined Benfica for a reported £10m in August, was named young player of the tournament during Argentina's World Cup triumph in Qatar and played a key role in Roger Schmidt's side so far this season.

The Blues are 10th in the Premier League, 10 points adrift of the Champions League places after 20 matches.

The former River Plate becomes Chelsea's eighth signing of the January window after Mykhaylo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, Andrey Santos, David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix.
