After a busy weekend of FA Cup action, we return to your regularly scheduled programming with another round of the WSL.
The stand-out game this weekend is of course Spurs against Chelsea. Tottenham have rotten luck against their rivals but will they manage something this time?
Chelsea’s title rivals Arsenal also have local opposition as they take on West Ham...
Leicester City v Manchester City
Leicester’s performance will give them the confidence to disrupt the Citizens yet again as the two face off in the league. However, this will be a much stronger Manchester City team.
Aston Villa v Brighton & Hove Albion
Villa put 11 past minnows Fylde in the FA Cup last weekend and will face tougher opposition in Brighton this weekend. The much-improved Midlands team managed a draw against Manchester City in their last league game. Manager Carla Ward was also named January's Manager of the Month.
Brighton are struggling this season but enjoyed a confidence-boosting 7-0 win in the cup against West Brom and have strengthened in the transfer window. However, this is exactly the kind of game where they need to pick up points to avoid Leicester City catching up to them.
The last time these two met, Brighton’s Maya Le Tissier (now at Manchester United) scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win to the Seagulls.
Manchester United v Everton
United will go into this game with confidence, with the team on a four-match winning streak and having already defeated the Toffees twice this season.
Everton suffered a shock cup exit at home to Birmingham City last weekend but it will be a difficult task to get anything on Sunday. However, Everton do possess January's Player of the Month, Gabrielle George, who will be looking to shut out her hometown club.
Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea
These two faced each other recently in the Conti Cup, with Chelsea enjoying a 3-1 victory.
This game is the start of a very difficult trilogy of games for Spurs, who face the two Manchester clubs after this one. Considering that Tottenham have won just three games all season, it’s difficult to see that changing any time soon – especially against Chelsea who always seem to have the better of them.
Chelsea meanwhile are coming off a 3-2 victory at home to Liverpool in the FA Cup with Sam Kerr scoring a hat-trick.
Liverpool v Reading
They’ll face a Reading team who put up a tough fight against Manchester United in their last WSL game, frustrating the league leaders until the 87th minute. That kind of defensive effort may help in Merseyside.
Hopefully, this game is as entertaining as the reverse fixture that ended in a 3-3 draw.
West Ham United v Arsenal
The Hammers booked a semi-final place in the Conti Cup with a 1-0 win over Liverpool before progressing to the next round of the FA Cup at the expense of Wolves. However, it’s difficult to see Paul Konchesky’s team making it three wins in a row against a team they’ve only ever lost to.
Arsenal failed with a late Russo bid, but they still strengthened in January with Victoria Pelova and Kathrine Kuhl both having already found the net for their club.
You would Jonas Eidevall’s team to secure a victory here, although their last WSL game was that dramatic 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium that could prove costly at the end of the season.
