We’re going into yet another international break but we’re doing it with style as we’ve got some great games in the WSL this week.
Let’s have a look at all the action coming up...
Brighton & Hove Albion v Manchester United
Last time out, the Seagulls could only manage a draw with Reading meaning they’re not out of a possible relegation scrap and must pick up points before their final game of the season against Leicester City. That won’t be easy against Manchester United who defeated Brighton 4-0 in the reverse fixture.
Last week saw Lucía García continue her good form in a 4-0 hammering of West Ham at Old Trafford. The bad news is that Maria Thorisdottir and Lisa Naalsund both look to be out for the rest of the season although new arrival Jayde Riviere was able to make the bench for the first time in that last game.
Arsenal v Manchester City
Arsenal overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Bayern 2-1 on aggregate after goals from Frida Maanum and Stina Blackstenius made the difference. That’s another great result for Jonas Eidevall’s side who also thrashed Spurs at the weekend.
The Gunners will need to recover quickly to tackle high-flying Manchester City though. City’s 2-0 win at home to Chelsea last Sunday has opened up the title race with the ‘top four’ now doing battle until the end of the season.
Coincidentally, this is the third meeting in two months between Arsenal and City. The Gunners won after extra-time in the FA Cup recently but lost in the WSL when they played in Manchester.
We know that City are brilliant at home but how will they fare in London?
Everton v Tottenham Hotspur
The Toffees were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby in last Friday’s game making it much more difficult to catch up to Aston Villa for fifth place. There was also the news this week that Leonie Maier is set to join Hoffenheim this summer, although the defender has featured just a handful of times this season.
Everton will probably feel confident about this game considering that not only did they defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in the last meeting but also that Spurs suffered a mauling by Arsenal in the North London derby at the weekend. Managerless Spurs have lost 12 games in the league this season now – only bottom-of-the-league Leicester City have lost more.
Leicester City v Reading
Reading’s 2-2 draw with Brighton wasn’t the ideal result when a win would have been a huge boost to their survival prospects. They can make up for it with a win away to Leicester who they defeated at home in the league already this season and on penalties in the FA Cup.
West Ham United v Liverpool
Hammers defender Lucy Parker pointed out this week that West Ham are the only club yet to stage a women’s game in the main stadium with the men’s U18s to be featured at the London Stadium before the women.
Perhaps being in front of their own fans in a bigger stadium is the kind of inspiration that Paul Konchesky’s team need after the weekend’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester United. The Hammers have still yet to win a league game in 2023, although they have picked up a few victories in the cup – including a 1-0 Conti Cup win over Liverpool back in January.
The Reds managed a respectable draw away to Everton in the Merseyside derby and won 2-0 against West Ham earlier this season in the league, so we’d imagine this is going to be a very close game between seventh and eighth.
Aston Villa v Chelsea
The Villans thrashed Leicester City 5-0 to make it four consecutive wins in a row in all competitions – that goes up to six if you want to include the penalty shoot-out victory away to West Ham in the FA Cup too. Kenza Dali, having a brilliant season, opened the scoring with braces also coming from Alisha Lehmann and, of course, Rachel Daly.
Carla Ward may feel like this is a good time to go up against Chelsea while full of confidence and knowing that the Blues have a Champions League second-leg tie with Lyon at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.
It will be up to Emma Hayes to help her team recover for what is a difficult league game with Millie Bright also in doubt having not trained so far this week.
History suggests that Chelsea should win this, just like they have done in all other eight meetings with Villa. But this is a much-improved Villa side.
