We’re back for another WSL round-up, although we don’t have many left to go through as we reach the final games of the season.
Will we see any dramatic twists and turns this weekend? Let’s find out..
Arsenal v Leicester City
The unlucky Gunners have suffered yet another long-term injury with Laura Wienroither the latest to join the ‘ACL club’ alongside Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, and Vivianne Miedema after the player was stretchered off in Monday’s Champions League semi-final defeat.
It’s another big blow for Jonas Eidevall’s team but you’d still expect them to comfortably overcome Leicester City.
However, the Foxes have improved a lot over the last few months and have won their last two games in a row including a resounding 4-0 win over Liverpool last time out. Regardless, Willie Kirk will be expecting to have a better chance in their final two games of the season against West Ham and Brighton rather than Friday’s fixture and the next game against Chelsea.
Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur
United have just three games remaining this season knowing that they have to win every single one of them to have a chance of staying in first place while hoping Chelsea slip up.
Spurs won’t be happy about helping their rivals if they do manage to get something against United but they have to think about themselves first. The North London outfit aren’t completely safe just yet and will be hoping to get a few more points on the board sooner rather than later.
And let's not forget, the last game between the two wasn't short of incident...
Reading v Aston Villa
It’s really not looking good for the Royals right now who are bottom of the WSL with three games left to play. It goes without saying that getting something – anything – from this game is vital but Aston Villa are difficult opposition as Reading know having already lost 3-1 to them earlier this season.
That’s especially true since Aston Villa will be looking to bounce back from that late defeat to Manchester United last time out and make sure they secure fifth place ahead of Everton. Carla Ward’s team will have plenty of motivation for this one.
Liverpool v Manchester City
City will be strong favourites though having already bested the Reds twice this season. They also quickly came back from that costly defeat to Arsenal in early April with two victories at home to Reading and West Ham United in which they scored 10 goals.
Liverpool will need to defend for their lives once again.
Brighton & Hove Albion v West Ham United
We’d like a game much like the last WSL meeting between the Seagulls and the Hammers, please.
Back in November, the two teams met in a nine-goal thriller in which Brighton took a 5-2 lead before the Hammers charged back to reduce the deficit to 5-4 but couldn’t quite snatch a point.
Certainly, Brighton would be happy with another three points considering they are only two ahead of bottom-of-the-league Reading. Meanwhile, West Ham are sitting much more comfortably in eight.
Chelsea v Everton
Now they host another Merseyside team as Everton come to town. The Toffees are competing with Villa to see who finishes behind the top four and could trouble the Blues.
Having said that, Chelsea certainly have had the better of Everton in recent years with the Blues winning their last six games against the Toffees in all competitions – conceding just once in that run.
Closing the gap on the top!
