Leeds' hopes of remaining in the Premier League were shattered on the dramatic final day as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham at Elland Road. A brace from Harry Kane, combined with goals from Pedro Porro and Lucas Moura, sealed their fate and condemned them to the Championship.
Sam Allardyce's side entered the match with the daunting task of securing a victory while also relying on other results to go their way in order to escape relegation after a disappointing season. Unfortunately for them, their day got off to the worst possible start.
In the opening minutes, Porro made a darting run from the right wing, collected a loose ball, and passed it to Son Heung-Min, who set up Kane to score with his first touch of the game, all within 91 seconds of kickoff.
The hosts responded well and had opportunities to equalize before the 10-minute mark. Robin Koch had a free header from close range but missed the target, followed by Pascal Struijk squandering a golden chance by sending the ball over the bar.
The negative atmosphere in the stadium only intensified when the second half started. The hosts found themselves caught off guard once again less than two minutes into the half. Kane turned provider this time, evading Liam Cooper and finding Porro, who skillfully found the corner of the net from a tight angle.
With Leicester extending their lead and Everton opening the scoring at Goodison Park, Leeds' fate was all but sealed. However, they did give themselves a glimmer of hope in the 67th minute when Jack Harrison unleashed a powerful low shot into the net.
Yet, Kane swiftly restored Tottenham's two-goal cushion just two minutes later. As Tottenham launched a swift counterattack, Kane calmly placed the ball into the corner, registering his 30th Premier League goal of the season.
Substitute Lucas Moura darted through the Leeds defense, capping off his five-year stay with a magical goal in stoppage time.
Despite the victory, Tottenham missed out on European football for the first time in a decade, setting the stage for a crucial summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Leeds must pick themselves up and prepare the Championship.
