Real Madrid have officially announced that Karim Benzema, their striker, will depart from the club this summer when his contract expires.
Initially, it was widely expected that the 35-year-old would sign a one-year extension, keeping him at Bernabeu until the end of the 2023-24 season.
However, Real Madrid confirmed the news on Sunday, stating that Benzema's farewell game would be against Athletic Bilbao in the La Liga later on.
In a released statement, the club expressed gratitude and affection towards Benzema, acknowledging him as one of their greatest legends:
Real Madrid CF and our captain Karim Benzema have agreed to end his brilliant and unforgettable period as a player for our club.
"Real Madrid wants to show its gratitude and all its affection for who is already one of our greatest legends.
"Real Madrid is and will always be his home, and he wishes him and all his family the best in this new phase of his life."
Benzema joined Real Madrid from Lyon in July 2009 and has made 647 appearances for the club, scoring 353 goals and providing 165 assists. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals for Real Madrid (450).
During the 2022-23 season, Benzema helped Real Madrid secure victories in the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup, and the Copa del Rey.
However, the team fell short in both La Liga and the Champions League. Benzema leaves Bernabeu with an impressive list of achievements, including four La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey trophies, five Champions League medals, three Spanish Super Cup wins, four UEFA Super Cup triumphs, and five Club World Cup victories.
