Championship Round-up | Preston back on top

Preston North End top the Championship once again after a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle.

The Lilywhites were briefly knocked off top spot yesterday when Leicester City won 4-1 away to fellow former top-flight side Southampton.

But Ryan Lowe’s team leapfrogged the Foxes today thanks to goals from Duane Holmes (in the first minute) and Liam Millar with Ryan Hardie scoring the only goal for Argyle. That result makes it five wins in succession for Preston.

With Southampton second, Ipswich Town take up third place. Kieran McKenna’s team are continuing to look right at home after promotion from League One. Conor Chaplin scored the only goal of the game as they beat fellow promoted side Sheffield Wednesday – the Owls wish they were enjoying Ipswich’s form right now.

Norwich City are next in the table, two points behind the Tractor Boys. Jack Stacey’s goal was enough to give the Canaries a 1-0 win at home to Stoke City.

The Black Cats sit just outside of the top six and have now won three of their last four league games. Tony Mowbray’s team had to come from behind against Queens Park Rangers with Jack Clarke cancelling out Kenneth Paal’s opener to put the teams in at half-time level.

In the second period, Daniel Ballard and Abdoullah Ba were both on the scoresheet to seal the win for Sunderland.

After not winning any of their four opening games, Neil Warnock’s Huddersfield Town are now up to wins on the bounce. Sorba Thomas set up Josh Koroma’s opener before Koroma did the same for Thomas to secure a 2-0 win.

Michael Carrick will be looking at that turnaround of form with jealous eyes as his Middlesbrough team remain winless. Boro went down to a 2-1 win to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

And in the late kick-off, Cardiff City defeated rivals Swansea City. 21-year-old Ollie Tanner opened the scoring a 2-0 win with his first-ever senior goal while Aaron Ramsey coolly rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot.
