Tonight is their seventh tournament semi

        A history of England's semi-finals

        2024/07/10 16:02

On Wednesday evening, England face the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the 2024 UEFA European Championships at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.

It is only England’s seventh major tournament semi-final ever but it is the third semi-final they have played in since 2018 in just four tournaments since the appointment of Gareth Southgate.

England have only ever won two of those semi-finals with the story of English football often being about heroic and brave failure against the run of play or the agonising existentialism of ‘what if…’ moments.

Whilst everyone prepares for a game that could see England reach back-to-back UEFA EURO finals, this is a look back at each of those six previous major tournament semis that England have played in.

1966 FIFA World Cup | England 2-1 Portugal in London

England’s first ever tournament semi came in the only tournament that have ever won back in 1966 at Wembley Stadium. Bobby Charlton scored a brace with goals in the 30th and 80th minutes before a Eusebio penalty brought it back to a one-goal margin but Alf Ramsey’s side held on for victory to set up that famous final with West Germany a few days later.

UEFA EURO 1968 | Yugoslavia 1-0 England in Florence

In order to qualify for the 1968 UEFA European Championships, England simply had to win a two-legged quarter-final against Spain in April. The first game at the actual tournament was therefore the semi-final, which they eventually lost to Yugoslavia by a solitary goal to nil with that strike coming in the 86th minute from Dragan Dzajic.

1990 FIFA World Cup | West Germany 1-1 England (AET 1-1 PENS 4-3) in Turin

It was a further 22 years until England would be back in the final four but it was a famous tournament at Italia ’90. England started that campaign poorly but grew into it and captured the imagination, arguably the better side in that 1-1 draw with the West Germans after 120 minutes but it was to be the first of seven tournament penalty shootout heartaches.

UEFA EURO 1996 | Germany 1-1 England (AET 1-1 PENS 6-5) in London

Six years later, another Paul Gascoigne-inspired run to the semis saw England then meat Germany but this time in London. Once again, they went ahead early on and, once again, they were the better side for much of the 120 minutes but, once again, England suffered a penalty shootout loss to Die Mannschaft with Gareth Southgate missing the crucial spot kick.

2018 FIFA World Cup | Croatia 1-1 England (AET 2-1) in Moscow

22 years passed, once again, before England would reach another major tournament semi-final. England, surpassing expectations, reached the semi-final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Kieran Trippier gave them a lead after just five minutes. Croatia, though, turned the game on its head with Mario Mandzukic scoring a winning goal in extra-time.

UEFA EURO 2020 | England 1-1 Denmark (AET 2-1) in London

England’s most recent semi-final before this evening came three years ago when they faced Denmark at Wembley Stadium. After going 1-0 down to a Mikkel Damsgaard free-kick, England quickly struck back and eventually won the game through Harry Kane in extra-time before then losing on penalties to Italy in the final.

        Inside 90 minutes…

        Played: 6

        Won: 1

        Drawn: 4

        Lost: 1

        Across 90 minutes & extra-time…

        Scored: 7

        Conceded: 7

A brace from Bobby Charlton saw off Portugal in a tournament where England only conceded one goal.

1990 FIFA World Cup | England 1-1 West Germany (3-4 on penalties) in Turin

Having reached the semi-finals of Italia ’90, England fell at the final four against West Germany in a heartbreaking penalty shootout. Things could have been different if Lineker didn’t miss a sitter or if Waddle’s penalty went in

A Geoff Hurst brace cancelled out an early Bobby Charlton own goal to see England through to the final.

As a football fan, I am ecstatic to see England back in the semi-finals of a major tournament. It's been a long time coming but it's a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team and their coach, Gareth Southgate. Let's hope they can break the cycle of near misses and finally secure a spot in the final.

The Three Lions took on Portugal led by the legendary Eusebio. A brace from Bobby Charlton was enough to seal a 2-1 win for England and send them through to the final.

As an en-GB football fan, I am absolutely buzzing for this
