Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal fight back to beat City and shake WSL title race

2024/05/05 17:25

Manchester City missed a golden opportunity to widen their lead in the Women's Super League title race, falling to a stunning late surge from Arsenal and ultimately losing 2-1 at the Joie Stadium.

Just days after Chelsea's unexpected defeat to Liverpool, Man City were in a very good position to win the WSL title.

The hosts started well and Lauren Hemp's goal in the 17th minute put them on track for victory.

However, the Gunners performed an extraordinary comeback in the dying minutes of the game to leave the WSL title race wide open.

Substitute Stina Blackstenius scored in the 89th minute and in stoppage time, completely turning the tide of the match and hand Arsenal the victory.

The result leaves City six points ahead of reigning champions Chelsea, who still have two games in hand.

If the Blues win both games, the WSL title could come down on goal difference on the final day, with City travelling to Aston Villa, while Chelsea take on Manchester United.

As a Man City fan, I am absolutely gutted by this loss. We had a great chance to widen our lead in the WSL title race, especially after Chelsea's defeat. But credit to Arsenal for their late surge and comeback, they deserved the win. We need to regroup and focus for the remaining games.

Wow, what a match! I'm absolutely gutted for Man City. They let Arsenal sneak in right at the end. Such a shame. But we're still in the lead, let's keep our heads up and fight till the end!

Wow, what a game! As a Man City fan, I'm disappointed with the loss. We had a golden opportunity to widen our lead in the WSL title race, but Arsenal's late surge was too much to handle. Credit to them for the comeback. Still hoping for a strong finish to secure the title.

As a Manchester City fan, I can't believe we let this one slip away. Disappointing result but still hopeful for the WSL title.

Wow, what an intense game! This was such a crucial match for Man City to secure the WSL title but they couldn't hold on to their lead. Arsenal's late surge was absolutely stunning and they deserved the win. It's definitely going to be an exciting end to the season with the title race wide open!
