Belgium bounce back with win over Romania

        2024/06/22 22:11

Belgium bounced back from their matchday one defeat after an impressive 2-0 win against Romania in Cologne.

Action: After losing 1-0 to Slovakia in their Group E opener, winning three points was crucial for Belgium to keep their chances of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The Red Devils couldn't have asked for a better start, taking the lead just 73 seconds into the match.

Jérémy Doku and Romelu Lukaku combined brilliantly, setting up Youri Tielemans, who blasted a right-footed shot past Florin Niță.

Romania nearly equalised immediately with Radu Drăgușin’s powerful header from Marius Marin’s cross, but Koen Casteels made a crucial save.

Following a frantic opening few minutes, Domenico Tedesco's men began to control the game and create more opportunities.

Kevin De Bruyne weaved through midfield and passed to Dodi Lukebakio, who cut inside and unleashed a fierce left-footed shot that was well saved.

Belgium continued to press before half-time, with De Bruyne nearly scoring on the stroke of the break when he drove to the edge of the box but hit a weak shot into Florin Niță’s gloves.

Shortly after the break, Romania sent a warning shot with Dennis Man’s speculative long-range effort, which was saved by Casteels.

The second half maintained a brisk pace, with the Man City playmaker almost extending Belgium’s lead with a curled shot from the edge of the area that went just wide.

Belgium thought they had doubled their lead at 64 minutes when Lukaku received a pass from De Bruyne and coolly slotted home, but a VAR review ruled the goal offside.

The end-to-end action continued, and Man wasted a great chance when he burst into the box, only to have his shot blocked by Casteels.

However, Belgium secured their second goal when De Bruyne fought for the ball inside the box and poked it home, sealing the three points for the Red Devils.

Big Picture: This result means that each of the four teams in Group E now have three points, with the remaining games scheduled for Wednesday.

The group is wide open for the final match day, when Belgium will play against Ukraine in Stuttgart, and Slovakia will go up against Romania in Frankfurt.

Player of the match: Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgium skipper performed when his team needed him most. The Manchester City maestro dictated the game as he wanted, leading his team to a vital win and topping it off with a goal.

        xG: Belgium (2.21) 2-0 (1.09) Romania

Stat of the Day: Youri Tielemans’ goals after 73 seconds is Belgium’s fastest goal at a major tournament (World Cup/Euros), and the third-fastest overall in UEFA European Championship history, after Russia’s Dmitry Kirichenko (1:05) against Greece in 2004 and Albania’s Nedim Bajrami (23 seconds) against Italy last week.
