Seagulls top of Group B in UEL

        Brighton edge past AEK

        2023/11/30 19:40

Brighton and Hove Albion earned a hard-fought 1-0 win in the Greek capital against AEK Athens this evening, as they move top of Group B in the UEFA Europa League.

AEK XI: Stankovic; Rota, Vida, Moukoudi, Hajsafi; Szymanski*; Amrabat, Mantalos, Pineda, Gacinovic; Zuber

AEK SUBS: Athanasiadis, Ginis, Mohammadi, Sidibe, Mitoglou, Pizarro, Eliasson, Araujo, Ponce

BRIGHTON XI: Verbruggen; Gross, Dunk*, Igor, Veltman; Hinshelwood, Gilmour; Adingra, Joao Pedro, Mitoma; Ferguson

BRIGHTON SUBS: McGill, Steele, Kavanagh, Jackson, Dahoud, Chouchane, Milner, Baleba, Buonanotte, Hinchy, Duffus

Action: Brighton, a normally attacking a front foot side, opted for a more cautious and controlling approach in this game, allowing AEK to basically dominate the opening exchanges.

However, throughout the first-half, a game that had been anticopaed as being one of the more thrilling match of the evening, suffered from a lack of goalmouth action. The closest either side was via two Orbelin Pineda chances.

The first being a half-volley, latching onto a second ball from a free-kick that Brighton half cleared with Pineda’s effort whistling past the past. The second being the midfielder driving into the box before firing into the side netting.

Brighton kicked on a little in the second-half and got reward for that less than 15 minutes in. A driving run from the left inside by Joao Pedro led to AEK captain, Damian Szymanski, tripping the Brazilian forward and, after initially saying no but then consulting with VAR, the referee pointed to the spot. Joao Pedro brushed himself down and slotted home expertly into the bottom corner.

Ten minutes later and the game really did go into Brighton’s favour with Mijat Gacinovic shown a second yellow card for a rash tackle on Joel Veltman, sending the Greeks down to ten men.

AEK did put the pressure on late on but The Seagulls survived for a much-needed victory and their third successive win in this season’s UEFA Europa League.

The big picture: AEK Athens are now out of this season’s competition but can still finish third and go into the knockout playoff round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Brighton and Hove Albion will win Group B should they defeat Olympique de Marseille at the AMEX Stadium in a couple of weeks, regardless of how Marseille fair against Ajax this evening.

Man of the match: Joao Pedro. The former Watford striker has now scored five goals in five games in this tournament for Brighton and he was their match winner tonight.

        ’56 | GOAL: Joao Pedro (0-1)

        ’66 | SENT OFF: Gacinovic

My opinion: Disappointing performance by @BrightonOfficial tonight. They looked too cautious and it showed in the lack of goalmouth action.

That was until the 60th minute when Brightons Paulo Gazzaniga found space on the edge of the area and fired in a low drive to break the deadlock.

AEKs best chance came late on when Thanasis Andronikos fired just wide of the post from a tight angle.

Solid performance from Brighton! Much needed win on the road as they move top of the group.

My opinion: Great effort from Brighton to take the win! They used a great game plan and showed that no opponent is too tough.
