Cifuentes not a contender for Baggies job

QPR manager Marti Cifuentes is not among the leading candidates for the vacancy at West Bromwich Albion, according to reports.

Spanish coach Cifuentes was placed on gardening leave by the Hoops last night and had been linked with a potential move to The Hawthorns as a successor to Tony Mowbray, as well as being associated with manager-less Norwich City.

However, BBC Radio WM reports that West Brom have yet to make a formal offer to any candidate and are "continuing with their recruitment process".

Cifuentes took charge of QPR in October 2023, following Gareth Ainsworth's departure, and successfully guided the team to Championship survival after taking over with the club second from bottom.

Despite another sluggish beginning to this campaign, QPR are currently 15th in the standings. Assistant coaches Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm will oversee the team’s final fixture of the season against Sunderland on Saturday.

"This is naturally a disappointing situation for everyone concerned," said QPR chief executive Christian Nourry.

"As a club, we are working to ensure this matter is resolved as swiftly as possible so we can start preparations in earnest for the future."
