EFL and FA Cup matches to look out for

We have another depleted schedule in the EFL this weekend with the FA Cup second and third rounds taking place. There are still a few key matches to keep an eye on, though, as well as in the FA Cup as teams begin to dream of a major event or away day in the third round of the cup next month.

This is a brief look at a few of the standout matches that are occurring in the EFL this weekend, as well as those dreamers in the oldest cup competition in the world…

Championship | West Bromwich Albion vs Leicester City | 12:30 on Saturday

This is a derby match but also an unlikely top-of-the-table clash. West Bromwich Albion have been on an outstanding run that has lifted them into the top six and the playoff places, ten points behind Ipswich and 11 behind league leaders. Leicester appeared destined to have the title wrapped up by the early spring but just one victory in their last four matches has really pegged The Foxes back towards the chasing pack.

Championship | Leeds United vs Middlesbrough | 15:00 on Saturday

Daniel Farke’s start at Leeds United was a bad one, following relegation from the Premier League last season. However, their come from behind victory against Swansea City on Wednesday evening helped keep up their relentless form as try and close the gap on the top two in the automatic promotion spots. Middlesbrough, under Michael Carrick, also started badly but ‘Boro begin this weekend now sitting just three points off the top six and the playoff places.

League One | Northampton Town vs Portsmouth | 15:00 on Saturday

This one is the only game taking place in League One this weekend but is significant at both ends of the table. Northampton Town sit seven points clear of the bottom four ahead of this weekend, following their promotion last season. They now face a Portsmouth side that, in the absence of anyone else playing, can return to the top-of-the-table above Bolton Wanderers, ahead of facing The Trotters at Fratton Park next week on Monday evening.

FA Cup | York City vs Wigan Athletic | 19:45 on Friday

The fairytale of York could very much be on the cards as non-league City host 2013 winners Wigan on Friday evening in a classic Roses match between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Neal Ardley has The Minstermen just outside of the relegation zone in the National League but they will be up for the cup as they take on a Latics side with a fair few squad depth issues that are attempting to push themselves into the top-half of the third-tier.

FA Cup | Sutton United vs Horsham | 15:00 on Saturday

This one perhaps doesn’t jump off the page but it features the EFL’s bottom club taking on seventh-tier opposition in bizarre circumstances. Horsham were re-instated after their 3-0 defeat to Barnsley in a first round replay after it was found that Barnsley had fielded an ineligible player. The Sussex club will now hope their luck continues against more EFL opposition and they couldn’t face a worse EFL side right now, albeit Sutton are in reasonable form with no league defeats in five.

Disillusioned with the lack of EFL action this weekend due to the FA Cup. With the top of the table clash between West Brom and Leicester it could be a great opportunity missed.

This one should be a cracker and a great gauge of where each side is at in terms of their hopes for the season.
