EFL round-up: Ipswich and Derby both drop points

Nets were bulging across the Championship and League One tonight, but arguably the two biggest EFL games of the night finished goal-less.

Here's Playmaker's whirlwind round-up of Wednesday night's EFL action.

Championship

Let's plunge straight into the big Championship clash of the night, which saw Ipswich take on Watford with a potential two point lead at the top of the table at stake.

Kieran McKenna's Tractor Boys have been a free-scoring force in the second tier all season, but they were unable to break the Hornets' backline tonight and, although they moved up to second in the table, level on points with Leicester, they missed their opportunity to go top.

Ipswich had their chances, particularly in the first-half, but were grateful to keeper Vaclav Hladky for a smart late stop from Edo Kayembe's 55-yard punt.

The other five Championship fixtures all saw goals - the highest-scoring fixture being Bristol City's impressive 5-0 win over Blackburn at home.

Elsewhere, Swansea racked up a 3-0 win over struggling Stoke, which kept the Potters firmly in the relegation mix, while Cardiff made it a good night for the Welsh sides in the division with a 1-0 away win at Birmingham.

The other two games of the night saw Hull draw 2-2 with Middlesbrough and West Brom beat relegated Rotherham two-nil at The Hawthorns.

Championship results

Birmingham 0-1 Cardiff
Bristol City 5-0 Blackburn
Ipswich 0-0 Watford
Hull 2-2 Middlesbrough
Swansea    3-0 Stoke
West Brom 2-0 Rotherham

League One

The second automatic promotion spot in League One is wide open after Derby County's 0-0 draw at Wycombe Wanderers tonight.

Paul Warne's Rams no longer have their fate in their own hands after their stalemate with the Chairboys, as third-placed Bolton are two points behind Derby with a game in hand.

Conor Hourihane and James Collins both went close for the Rams in the latter stages, but to no avail.

Still in with a shot at automatic promotion are fourth-placed Peterborough, who sit six points behind Derby with two games in hand after a comfortable 3-0 win over Port Vale this evening.

A thunderbolt from Joel Randall, a penalty from Harrison Burrows and an own goal from Alex Iacovitti did the damage for Posh - who have an interesting run-in in store prior to their final game of the season...at home to Bolton.

League One results

Peterborough 3-0 Port Vale
Wycombe 0-0 Derby

As a football fan, it's frustrating to see a goalless draw in such an important Championship clash between Ipswich and Watford. Although Ipswich moved up to second in the table, they missed the chance to go top. Hladky's late save was crucial, but I was hoping for more goals from the free-scoring Tractor Boys.

Wow, what a night in the EFL! Nets were bulging left and right, but unfortunately the two big games ended in goal-less draws. Tough luck for Ipswich who missed the chance to go top after a solid performance against Watford.

As a football fan, I have to say I'm disappointed with Ipswich's performance tonight. They've been on fire this season but couldn't find the back of the net against Watford. Hopefully they'll bounce back in their next game.

As a football fan, I'm disappointed with the goal-less draw between Ipswich and Watford. Both teams had their chances but failed to capitalize. Tough luck for Ipswich, who missed the chance to go top of the Championship table.

As a football fan, I have to say I was disappointed with the goalless draw between Ipswich and Watford tonight. Both teams have been scoring goals all season and it's a shame they couldn't find the back of the net in such an important game. It's always frustrating to see a match end in a stalemate, but it's also a testament to the strong defensive performances by both sides. Hopefully we'll see more action and goals in their next match.
