EFL round-up: Rovers record first win under Eustace

      2024/04/01 18:17

Just a few days after a full Friday of fixtures, most EFL teams were in action once again in a packed Monday of afternoon games.

There were some eye-brow raising results over the Championship, League One, and League Two as well as some big scores, beginning with Blackburn's win away to Sunderland...

John Eustace recorded his first win as Blackburn Rovers manager in style as his side defeated Sunderland 5-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Sammie Szmodics was the star of the show as he scored twice and set up one with Ryan Hedges, Tyrhys Dolan, and Andy Moran also getting in on the action. Chris Rigg's 77th-minute goal for the Black Cats was scant consolation.

While the scoreline was emphatic, it was the three points that were most valuable for Rovers which sees them five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of Southampton's visit this weekend.

Elsewhere, West Brom came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Watford thanks to Darnell Furlong's late leveller and Rotherham United bagged three points at home to Millwall – that was just the Millers’ fourth of the season.

      Championship final scores

      Stoke City 1-1 Huddersfield Town
      Sunderland 1-5 Blackburn Rovers
      West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Watford
      Rotherham United 2-1 Millwall
Swansea City 0-1 Queens Park Rangers
      Plymouth Argyle 0-1 Bristol City
Birmingham City 1-0 Preston North End
      Coventry City 1-2 Cardiff City
      Middlesbrough 2-0

      League One

Bolton Wanderers did what they needed to do with a 5-2 win over Reading ahead of the top two facing off tomorrow.

Aaron Collins bagged a hat-trick for his side to put him on 10 for the season for both Bolton and Bristol Rovers this campaign while Jón Bodvarsson. The Icelandic forward is also up to 10 on the season. Meanwhile, Lewis Wing and Paul Mukairu were on the scoresheet for the visitors.

The Trotters are now three points off Derby County and eight behind leaders Portsmouth, although Pompey do still have a game in hand over both sides.

      League One final scores

      Cheltenham Town 1-2 Exeter City
      Charlton Athletic 0-0 Stevenage
      Leyton Orient 1-2 Peterborough United
      Northampton Town 2-0 Port Vale
      Oxford United 4-0 Fleetwood Town
      Carlisle United 1-3 Lincoln City
      Cambridge United 3-1 Wigan Athletic
      Blackpool 0-0 Wycombe Wanderers
      Bolton Wanderers 5-2 Reading
      Bristol Rovers 0-0 Shrewsbury Town
      Burton Albion 1-3 Barnsley

      League Two

Forest Green Rovers are now letting go of their Football League status without a fight. After looking down and out for much of the season, FGR returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory away to promotion-chasing Crewe Alexandra.

Jordon Garrick's brace and another from Jamie Robson put Rovers 3-0 up inside the first half-hour in Crewe with the home side unable to get back into the game.

That was FGR's fifth win under Steve Cotterill and it seems them move within two points of 23rd-place Colchester United although remain three away from Sutton United, who won at home to Swindon Town

There's still one more game to be played in the fourth tier as Doncaster Rovers host Wrexham tomorrow evening.

      League Two final scores

      Grimsby Town 1-1 Bradford City
      Stockport County 1-0 AFC Wimbledon
      Sutton United 3-1 Swindon Town
      Walsall 2-1 Salford City
      Notts County 3-3 MK Dons
      Tranmere Rovers 1-1 Colchester United
      Newport County 0-4 Crawley Town
Crewe Alexandra 0-3 Forest Green Rovers
      Harrogate Town 5-1 Gillingham
      Morecambe 2-1 Barrow
