EFL Trophy Final: Peterborough United Q & A

2024/04/04 22:46
E3

Peterborough United face Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley Stadium on Sunday with promotion-chasing Posh looking to secure what will hopefully be the first of two major achievements this season in the EFL Trophy final.

Darren Ferguson’s men have won the competition on one previous occasion, back in the 2013/14 campaign when they defeated Chesterfield by three goals to one in the final.

That is the only time that Peterborough have played at the new Wembley Stadium, having played twice at the old Wembley with play-off final victories over Stockport County and Darlington.

With a 100% record at English football’s headquarters, Peterborough supporters will be confident as they take on the Chairboys this weekend. We managed to speak to Posh fan Joe (@jfgpufc) to check the temperature of the United fanbase as a whole ahead of the short trip down south.

Q) Peterborough United head to Wembley this weekend looking for silverware but, frankly, is the EFL Trophy remotely a priority as they hunt automatic promotion back to the Championship?

A) Promotion to the Championship should definitely be and is the main priority. However, due to the fact we have reached the final, I think we may as well go all out with a full strength side to win it.

Q) A day out at Wembley, regardless of the competition, tends to be a day for unity and celebration within the fanbase; is there a general feeling of excitement for Posh supporters this weekend?

A) The excitement has begun to steadily build in recent weeks ever since the semi-final and that excitement is now really high. The fact it has been ten years since our last Wembley appearance has contributed to that.

Q) The semi-final display against Blackpool in which Peterborough won 3-0 at Bloomfield Road was excellent and some of the football was sublime. Will there perhaps be a feeling of under achievement, with the players within the squad, if a top two finish is not secured this season?

A) I do not think that finishing outside of the top two and the automatic promotion spots would be seen as an under achievement. At the start of this season, many of us thought that we’d actually be in the middle-of-the-table. However, as the season has progressed, there have been times where we have looked like we could have ended up as champions.

Q) How well would you rate the job that Darren Ferguson has done to get his side regrouped and recalibrated after the gut-wrenching defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off semi-finals last season?

A) Darren Ferguson has done a great job after last season and he has done well to ensure the players that played in that semi-final second-leg at Hillsborough last season have seemingly not been impacted too much from that game. New signings like Jed Steer and Archie Collins have helped with that, too.

Q) For a neutral with more of a passive interest in the game and Leagues One and Two, which Peterborough players would you suggest to keep an eye on at Wembley this weekend?

A) Most definitely keep an eye on the likes of Ronnie Edwards, Harrison Burrows, Kwame Poku and Ephron Mason-Clark. The latter is already signed up to play for Coventry next season and, with or without us, the expectation is that the other three will all play at a higher level too.

Q) Finally, have to ask, your score prediction?

A) I am going to go with 3-1 to Peterborough with Ricky-Jade Jones, Josh Knight and the aforementioned Mason-Clark to score the goals.
