England lose their final warm-up friendly before the Euros

2024/06/07 21:47

England will head into Euro 2024 on the back of a defeat, having fallen 1-0 to Iceland at Wembley on Friday.

The visitors got off to a dream start, taking the lead just 11 minutes into the game.

A simple pass found Jón Thorsteinsson in space down the left and he drove at the home defence, cut inside John Stones, and fired a low shot past Aaron Ramsdale at his near post.

The Three Lions started to find their rhythm and came close to equalising when Cole Palmer delivered a beautiful cross, but Harry Kane somehow missed the target.

In the second half, the tempo increased and England looked much improved.

Cole Palmer had two opportunities early in the second half, but one of his shots hit the side netting, and the other went wide after facing an onrushing Hákon Valdimarsson, ending up deflected behind for a corner.

Iceland threatened on the counter-attacks and had a great opportunity to double their lead when Andri Gudjohnsen set up Thorsteinsson, who missed from six yards out.

Shortly after, an unmarked Daníel Grétarsson almost extended Iceland's lead through a corner, but Aaron Ramsdale made a strong save.

Midway through the second half, Gareth Southgate implemented several substitutions. However, as the match drew to a close, the Three Lions' performance became more disorganised, and they struggled to pose any significant danger to Valdimarsson's goal.

The search for an equaliser in the final moments proved unsuccessful, leaving them to head to Germany on the back of a disappointing defeat and a lacklustre performance.

While it was just a warm-up match, it was England's final chance to gain some momentum before the tournament kick-off. The performance level must improve significantly if England aspires to clinch the title.

As a fan of one of the teams, I am gutted to see England fall to Iceland in this crucial Euro 2024 match. We started off slow and paid the price with an early goal by Thorsteinsson. Despite our efforts in the second half, we couldn't convert and ended up with a disappointing defeat. Let's regroup and come back stronger for the next game!

As an England fan, I can't believe we lost to Iceland at Wembley. We should have done better. But, I have to stay optimistic for Euro 2024. We still have a strong team and I believe we can bounce back and perform well. Let's go Three Lions!

As an England fan, this defeat to Iceland is a tough pill to swallow. We were slow to start and couldn't recover from their early goal. But seeing our team pick up the pace in the second half gives me hope for the future. Let's bounce back and come back stronger in Euro 2024!

As a die-hard England fan, this is just heartbreaking. We had such high hopes for this game and to come away with a loss is devastating. But there's always next time. We'll come back stronger for Euro 2024!
