      Englishmen abroad

We are heading into the first international break of the 2024/25 season with England, back-to-back runners’ up of the UEFA European Championships, beginning a new era under the interim management of former U21 coach Lee Carsley.

In his first squad selection last week, Carsley pulled out a few surprises and one of them, Angel Gomes, has been a feature of this article throughout the last couple of years with the Lille midfielder excelling in Ligue 1 after being fundamental to helping England win the UEFA U21 European Championships in the summer of 2023 under Carsley.

There are plenty of Englishmen playing across Europe’s five biggest leagues this season and there will be plenty more looking to emulate Gomes and break into Carsley’s squad.

This is a rundown of all of the England-eligible players to feature across the German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga, French Ligue 1 and Italian Serie A over the weekend…

      BUNDESLIGA

      Dapo Afolayan (St Pauli)
      Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Borussia Dortmund)
      Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

Bayern Munich have two Englishmen on the books and one of them, last season’s European Golden Shoe Award winner, scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season with Harry Kane notching from the penalty spot as Bayern Munich defeated Freiburg by two goals to nil. His former Tottenham Hotspur teammate, Eric Dier, was an unused substitute in that victory at the Allianz Arena.

Former Bolton Wanderers man Dapo Afolayan once again came off the bench for St Pauli after being instrumental to their 2. Bundesliga title win under Fabian Hurzeler last season.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, on the other hand, earned himself a start after a match-winning brace on the opening day of the season but the young winger was hooked mid-way through the second-half as Borussia Dortmund were held to a goalless draw by Werder Bremen.

      LA LIGA

      Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid)

Jude Bellingham has become one of the best players in the world since joining Real Madrid last summer but the former Birmingham City man is out injured until after this international break. His England teammate, though, Conor Gallagher, has joined him in the Spanish capital and he made his first Atletico start this weekend as Los Rojiblancos edged past Athletic Club by a goal to nil at San Mames.

      LIGUE 1

      Charlie Cresswell (Toulouse)
      Angel Gomes (Lille)
      Mason Greenwood (Olympique de Marseille)
      Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Olympique Lyonnais)
      Jonathan Rowe (Olympique de Marseille)

With a couple of managers in Ligue 1 in Will Still and Liam Rosenior at Lens and Strasbourg respectively, there are also five Englishmen that featured in the French top-flight at the weekend.

One of those Englishmen, Mason Greenwood, is reported to be likely to switch international allegiances to Jamaica with Steve McClaren but he notched another brace at the weekend to take his tally for the season to five goals in three matches. Hopefully he does switch and he doesn’t have to be recognised in this article again.

Jonathan Rowe is a teammate of his on the south coast in France after he joined on loan from Norwich City and, once again, came off the bench as they defeated Toulouse by three goals to one. Charlie Cresswell made the move to Toulouse from Leeds United in the summer and the defender scored an own goal in that defeat to Marseille.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has become an integral part of Pierre Sage’s Olympique Lyonnais side in the last nine months and he was once again a key starter as they defeated Strasbourg by four goals to three in a thriller at Parc OL on Friday evening.
Lille midfielder Angel Gomes made his return this weekend from a sickening head injury he sustained on the opening day of the campaign. He, as mentioned, will now join up with England’s senior squad for the first time this week.

      SERIE A

      Tammy Abraham (Milan)
      Keinan Davis (Udinese)
      Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Milan)
      Fikayo Tomori (Milan)

On the final day of the summer transfer window, England international Tammy Abraham made the move to AC Milan on loan from Roma. He has linked up with fellow England internationals Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek and those two started as the Rossoneri rescued a point against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in a 2-2 draw with Abraham coming off the bench.

Former Watford striker and last season’s Udinese hero, Keinan Davis, came off the bench once again for the Friulians as they continued their strong start to the campaign with a 1-0 defeat of Cesc Fabregas’ newly-promoted Como.

Experienced defender Chris Smalling was an unused substitute for Roma this weekend, whilst Omari Forson, who joined Monza this summer, and Samuel Iling-Junior, who is on loan at Bologna from Aston Villa, were also left on the bench by their respective sides.

As an England fan, I'm excited to see Angel Gomes in the squad for the upcoming international break. He's been performing well for Lille and was a key player in our U21 European Championship win. Can't wait to see who else will impress under Carsley's interim management.
