FA Cup round-up: Maidstone dump out in-form Barrow

        2023/12/02 18:33

National League South side Maidstone United dumped League Two Barrow AFC out of the FA Cup on Saturday to reach the third round of the competition.

Peter Wild's Bluebirds entered the game after winning seven games straight across all competitions and they took the lead thanks to a goal from Ben Whitfield. However, Sam Come levelled the game by slamming home before the break and Bivesh Gurung struck the non-league side's matchwinner on 74 minutes to stun their EFL opponents.

The victory marked the first time Maidstone had reached the FA Cup third round since 1988.

Elsewhere, Morecambe pulled off something of a shock with a 2-0 away win over Wycombe Wanderers. Goals either side of the break from Eli King and Tom Bloxham did the damage for the Shrimps and booked their place in the next round.

Gillingham also beat higher-level opposition with a fantastic result at home to Charlton Athletic. A quick one-two in the first-half, Macaulay Bonne and Timothee Dieng netting on 26 and 30 minutes respectively, was enough to earn the Gills victory and put their name in the hat for the third round draw.

Two League One clubs to run out comfortable winners were Bolton Wanderers and Cambridge United.

The Trotters put League Two Harrogate to the sword with a convincing 5-1 win - a hat-trick from Jon Bodvarsson and a double from Dan Nlundulu sinking the Sulphurites, who were only able to muster the one goal from George Thomson.

Cambridge, meanwhile, thumped their League One peers Fleetwood thanks to strikes from Danny Andrew, Elias Kachunga, Fejiri Okenabirhie and Hassan Ahadme.

Of the 3pm kick-offs on Saturday, two will go to replays: Newport and National League Barnet playing out a 1-1 draw, while League One sides Stevenage and Port Vale were deadlocked at the same scoreline.

The third round draw will will be held on Sunday 3 December and shown live on ITV during their build-up coverage of the Eastleigh and Reading tie from around 12.55pm GMT.

Goals from Vadaine Oliver and Brandon Hanlan either side of the break meant the Gills had their victory in the bag before the Addicks scored a consolation late on.
Disappointing result for Barrow AFC who were on a roll in the League Two. Kudos to Maidstone United and Morecambe for producing some giant-killing results in the FA Cup!
