Georgia and Czech Rep. share spoils in entertaining draw

2024/06/22 16:11

Georgia earned their first point at a major tournament with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic on Saturday, meaning both teams will likely need to win their final match to have any chance of progressing.

Action: The Czechs started energetically, creating a couple of early chances to take the lead.

Just two minutes in, Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili made a superb double save to deny Adam Hlozek’s shot and Patrik Schick’s follow-up effort.

Georgia struggled against the physicality of the Czech team, especially from set-pieces, and a long throw from Vladimir Coufal caused panic midway through the first half.

Coufal’s delivery wasn’t cleared, and although Mamardashvili saved Hlozek’s shot, the striker bundled in the rebound with his face and hand. However, VAR disallowed the goal.

Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek had little to do in the first half but blocked Guram Kashia’s close-range shot from a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia free-kick just before half-time.

A VAR check then showed a handball by Robert Hranec, leading to a penalty for Willy Sagnol's side.

From the penalty spot, Georges Mikautadze calmly converted, giving the lead to Georgia.

In the second half, the Czechs renewed their efforts, forcing Georgia to play on the counter.

A Czech corner was cleared, allowing Kvaratskhelia to lead an 80-yard counter-attack and set up Anzor Mekvabishvili, whose shot went just wide.

Ivan Hasek's men levelled shortly before the hour mark from a corner. Coufal’s cross was met by substitute Ondrej Lingr, whose header hit the post, allowing Schick to bundle the ball over the line with his chest.

Ladislav Krejci almost gave the Czechs the lead three minutes later with a header that drifted wide from a similar set-piece.

As Georgia tired, Czechia created more chances. Mojmir Chytil glanced a diving header just wide, and Mamardashvili parried a Lingr shot.

The game nearly had a dramatic ending, but Saba Lobjanidze fired over the bar after a three-on-one counter-attack, frustrating the Georgian supporters.

Big Picture: The draw leaves both teams with one point after two matches. Portugal and Turkey, who are set to play later, each have three points.

Having lost their opening games, both the Czechs and Georgia now need to win their final match to have any chance of advancing to the last 16.

Georgia will finish the group stage when they take on Portugal, while the Czech Republic will face Turkey with both games set to be played on Wednesday.

Man of the Match: Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Valencia goalkeeper made numerous crucial saves throughout the match (11), keeping his team in the game and helping them secure their first point in a major tournament.

xG: Georgia (1.34) 1-1 (3.45) Czechia

Stat of the Day: Patrik Schick has become Czechia's all-time leading scorer at the UEFA European Championship, surpassing Milan Baros' record of five goals with his sixth goal in the competition today.

We may have struggled against the Czech Republic, but our goalkeeper Mamardashvili made some incredible saves. With one game left, we've still got a shot at progressing, and I have faith that our boys will give it their all.

As a Georgia fan, I'm disappointed that we couldn't secure the win, but I'm still optimistic about our chances. Our goalkeeper was on top form and we were able to hold off the Czechs for a draw. We just need to focus on winning our final match to have a chance of progressing.
