Hungary defeated in Stuttgart...

Germany cruise into the knock-out stages

2024/06/19 19:07

Germany cruised to a 2-0 win after outclassing Hungary in Stuttgart, ensuring they will progress to the knockout stages with Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan on the scoresheet.

Action: Germany may not have been as prolific as they were against Scotland on the opening day but they always looked like the better said against Hungary.

One of the stars of the first round of games, Jamal Musiala, opened the scoring for Germany becoming the first player in EURO 2024 to score twice.

The goal came from some poor defending by Hungary, in particular Willi Orban, who was jostled off the ball by Ilkay Gundogan as he attempted to defend in his area. Orban wasn't strong enough to stop Gundogan from getting on to the loose ball though, with the Barcelona man able to find Musiala who opened the scoring in the 22nd minute.

Hungary did have their chances though, most notably when Manuel Neuer was called up to keep out Dominik Szoboszlai's free-kick.

With the first half ending both teams had good chances. The first was a shot from Musiala that hit the side netting but from some angles looked like it had found the goal.

Then just before the break, another Szoboszlai free-kick caused problems with Neuer saving Orban's effort but unable to keep out Roland Sallai on the rebound. Luckily for the Germans though, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Half-time: Germany 1-0 Hungary

The Hungarians continued to find promising situations in the second period with Barnabás Varga having a golden chance when he met Sallai's cross but wasn't able to convert.

At this level, missing big chances like Hungary did will lead to you being punished and that's exactly what happened when Germany doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Max Mittelstadt's low cross from the left was swept home by Gundogan.

Marco Rossi's side looked far better than they did against Switzerland in the opening game and almost pulled one back in the 90th minute. Joshua Kimmich's goal-line clearance for Germany ensured that substitute Daniel Gazdag wasn't able to get on the scoresheet.

Man of the match: Former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was the main man for Julian Nagelsmann's side. The 33-year-old first showed his persistence in picking up the ball to set up Musiala's opener before sealing the win himself in the second half.

Big picture: Germany are already through to the knockout stages knowing that they can ensure they're group winners with a positive result over Switzerland. It's looked almost too easy for them so far. Hungary meanwhile must defeat Scotland in their final game.

xG: Germany (1.66) 2-0 (1.27) Hungary

Stat of the match: Manuel Neuer made his 17th European Championship appearance in this game drawing him level with fellow goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for most Euro appearances.

As a football fan of Germany, I am extremely content with their performance against Hungary. While they may not have been as dominant as they were in their first game, they still showed their superiority on the field. Musiala's goal was well-deserved and it's great to see him become the first player in EURO 2024 to score twice. And even though Hungary had their chances, our defense, led by Neuer, was able to handle them effectively.

Disappointing that we couldn't replicate our performance from the Scotland game, but still a solid win. Musiala and Gundogan were fantastic, but we need to tighten up our defense. Neuer came up big for us again.

Comment: What a dominant performance from Germany. Musiala proving once again why he's one of the standout players of this tournament. And Gundogan, what a player he is. Always a threat in the midfield. But Hungary did have their moments, Neuer had to be at his best to keep them at bay.

As a football fan, I have to say that Germany played with such finesse and control against Hungary. Jamal Musiala's goal was a thing of beauty and Ilkay Gundogan's assist was just as impressive. Hungary did have some chances, but they were no match for Germany's skill. A well-deserved win for die Mannschaft!
