Germany name 27-man preliminary squad

Mats Hummels has been omitted from Julian Nagelsmann’s preliminary 27-man Germany squad ahead of this summer’s UEFA European Championships.

The Borussia Dortmund defender has been in excellent form in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League but the former Bayern Munich man, now 35, has been overlooked for this summer with his teammate Nico Schlotterbeck among those selected instead.

As well as Schlotterbeck, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah as well as Antonio Rudiger of Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt man Robin Koch and Stuttgart defender Waldemar Anton have all been preferred.

Another surprise omission would be Serge Gnabry, albeit the Bayern Munich winger is struggling with persistent injuries, whilst his teammate Leon Goretzka has also been left out.

In terms of players going to the tournament from English clubs, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Pascal Gross has been selected alongside Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz.

Germany, who are hosting the tournament, begin their campaign in the opening match against Scotland on Friday 14th July at the Olympiastadion in Berlin before facing Hungary and Switzerland in the groups.

Disappointed to see Hummels and Gnabry left out of the Germany squad. They've both been in great form recently and would have been valuable assets for the team. Glad to see Gross and Havertz included though

As a football fan, I can't believe Hummels has been left out of the Germany squad for the Euros. He's been in top form for Dortmund and deserves a spot. Disappointed to see Gnabry and Goretzka also missing out, but excited to see Gross and Havertz representing English clubs.
