Gordon goal consigns Red Devils to defeat

        2023/12/02 22:07

Newcastle United turned in a dominant display to record a 1-0 win over Manchester United at St James' Park on Saturday evening.

A competitive contest saw both teams have their moments, but Eddie Howe's side were on the front foot for the majority of the game and they bagged victory courtesy of Anthony Gordon's close range finish from Kieran Trippier's slide-rule cross.

United plugged away and had a late goal from Antony disallowed for an offside call against Harry Maguire, but the Magpies held on to seal an impressive win - the one big downside for the hosts being an injury that saw keeper Nick Pope subbed late on.

The Action: Both sides entered the contest after draining Champions League ties midweek, but the tempo was high from the off at St James' Park.

Newcastle probed in the early stages and prompted a couple of moments of early panic between under-pressure Andre Onana and his defenders, the Cameroon keeper flapping at a Kieran Trippier corner and almost tangling with his own team-mate Diogo Dalot in a separate incident.

United looked dangerous at the other end, however, and they had the first shot of note in the game when Bruno Fernandes released Alejandro Garnacho for an effort that stung the palms of Toon keeper Nick Pope.

On 16 minutes, however, Onana came to United's rescue with a fantastic save from Miguel Almiron after the Paraguay international had been expertly found in the box by Bruno Guimaraes, who himself fired narrowly over moments later from the edge of the box.

The hosts were building up a head of steam and Almiron escaped down the right on 18 minutes to spark mayhem in the box that ended with Harry Maguire deflecting Alexander Isak's shot a matters of inches wide of the post.

It was an absorbing contest, as United continued to offer a threat going forward, with Marcus Rashford showing glimpses of his ability coming off the right, while the hosts kept pushing for an opening goal - Almiron failing to hit the target with a good chance on 32 minutes.

The closest either side came to break the deadlock in the first half, however, was a Trippier free-kick on 38 minutes that slammed into the crossbar and bounced down...the wrong side of the line from a Newcastle perspective.

        Half-time: Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

It remained just as competitive after the break and the hosts enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, Joelinton drilling a shot straight at Onana after some inventive twisting and turning on the edge of the box within 10 minutes of the restart...and a goal was coming.

Newcastle were having some joy with Tino Livramento pushing on against Rashford down their left, but the hosts opener was created on the opposite flank - Kieran Trippier skidding an inviting low cross across the six yard box for Anthony Gordon to gleefully convert.

United threw on big money subs Rasmus Hojlund and Antony to trigger a comeback, but with 70 minutes on the clock Eddie Howe's team were still ahead and spending large swathes of time in the visitors' half.

On 77 minutes, Newcastle were almost two ahead, Aaron Wan-Bissaka putting his body on the line to block a goal-bound shot from Almiron - the United defender blocking with his chest from close range.

United weren't done just yet, though, and a melee in the box ended with Newcastle goalkeeper Pope leaving the action after he appeared to painfully jar his shoulder while diving to his left for a blocked shot from Maguire.

With former United reserve Martin Dubravka now between the sticks for the hosts, the clock ticked down with United attempting to turn the screw.

Two minutes of the 90 remained when the visitors did find the back of the net, but Antony's shot clipped the offside Maguire on its way in and the goal was rapidly chalked off by VAR.

The hosts hung on for a win that saw them leapfrog their visitors into fifth place in the Premier League, United slipping to seventh.

Newcastle soon settled into the game, with Trippier dominating down the right-hand side and providing a constant outlet for the hosts.

My comment: Absolutely brilliant performance from Newcastle United! Well deserved 3 points against Man United. Pope's injury is a big blow though

Newcastle put Manchester United on the back foot early on and their pressure paid off when Gordon grabbed the opener in the 25th minute - the England international tapping home from close range from Trippier&
