A Nati enter Euros after turbulent qualification

Group A preview: Switzerland

2024/06/07 13:43
E3

Keen to banish memories of their 6-1 defeat to Portugal in the last 16 of the World Cup, Switzerland look decidedly shaky ahead of Euro 2024.

The Nati stumbled over the line in qualifying and manager Murat Yakin's attempts to inject fresh blood into an ageing squad have largely underwhelmed.

A familiar face in the knockout phases of major tournaments, a repeat of their quarter-final run at Euro 2020 seems unlikely.

To get the lowdown on the Swiss, we renewed our acquaintance with football writer Emanuel Staub from X account Bolzplazz to learn more about Switzerland's current crop.

Keep an eye out for Playmaker's definitive guide to the Euros, complete with profiles on all 24 nations competing, in the latest issue of 'The Mighty Delta'

Star man

After recently becoming the most capped Swiss player of all time with 122 caps, Granit Xhaka is the heart and soul of this squad, as well as its captain.

Coming off the back of a historic Double-winning season with Bayer Leverkusen, where he was an absolutely key figure, Xhaka comes to these Euros in the form of his life.

Tactically smart, aggressive and with a lovely left-foot, Xhaka sets the tone for the Swiss.

Young gun

Elegant Montpellier centre-back Becir Omeragic and AC Milan’s explosive attacker Noah Okafor are worth keeping an eye on, but arguably the most interesting Swiss prodigy is Burnley’s versatile attacker Zeki Amdouni

Cheeky, dangerous and two-footed, Amdouni is expected to play a key role for Switzerland this summer after leading the goal charts for the Nati with six strikes in qualifying. Scored five Premier League goals for the Clarets last term.

@Young Boys

Wildcard

With Breem Embolo battling back from another unfortunate injury, Murat Yakin has been on the lookout for a new target man - and he may have found one in Joël Monteiro, who earned his first call-up only matter of weeks ago.

The Young Boys breakout-star is tall and robust, and combines raw power with excellent athleticism. Playing in the Swiss fifth tier as recently as 2019, Monteiro featuring at the Euros would be quite a story.

Opinion

There has been turbulence surrounding the Swiss Nati prior to the tournament with plenty questioning Murat Yakin's position given an underwhelming qualification campaign.

However, this Swiss team has the individual quality to beat anyone on its day and they can draw positives from their proven experience of navigating the group stages.

Germany 2024 is likely to be the 'Last Dance' for the core of this group – the likes of Yann Sommer, Ricardo Rodriguez and Xherdan Shaqiri - and fans are hoping the team will bow out on a high note.

Preferred formation: 3-5-2

Despite being a polarizing figure among Arsenal fans, Xhaka brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Swiss team. He will be crucial to their success at Euro 2024.

As a Swiss football fan, I can't help but feel disillusioned by our performance in the last World Cup and our shaky qualifying for Euro 2024. Yakin's attempts to rejuvenate the squad have been underwhelming and I highly doubt we'll make it past the quarter-finals like we did in

His experience and leadership will be crucial if Switzerland hopes to make it out of a tough group and advance in the tournament. As a fellow football fan, I have high hopes for Xhaka and the entire Swiss team, but the shaky performances leading up to Euro 2024 have me feeling a bit nervous. Fingers crossed for a strong showing from the Nati!

As a Swiss football fan, I have to say I'm disappointed with the performance of our national team in recent times. The 6-1 defeat to Portugal was a tough loss to swallow and our qualifying round was far from convincing. While I appreciate Murat Yakin's efforts to rejuvenate the squad, it hasn't had much impact. And let's be real, with our track record in major tournaments, I highly doubt we'll make it to the quarter-finals again at Euro
