Didier Deschamps opts for 25 rather than 26

Kante is shock call-up to France squad

Didier Deschamps has produced a shock in his final 25-man France squad for UEFA EURO 2024 with veteran midfielder N’Golo Kante recalled to Les Bleus.

The 33-year-old moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad from Chelsea last summer and hasn’t featured for France since June 2022. He missed the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to a knee injury and has earned just three of his 53 caps since France were knocked out on penalties by Switzerland in the Round of 16 of UEFA EURO 2020.

The star names in the two-time world champions’ squad remain the likes of captain Kylian Mbappe and vice-captain Antoine Griezmann. Kingsley Coman has made the cut alongside Ousmane Dembele in attack.

PSG winger Bradley Barcola, who is uncapped, has made the squad alongside fellow PSG youngster Warren Zaire-Emery but Lucas Hernandez misses out through injury.

There are also injury concerns over Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid with the former Monaco midfielder potentially set to miss the UEFA Champions League final in a couple of weeks with a hamstring issue.

The likes of Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto, Matteo Guendouzi, Michael Olise, Christopher Nkunku and Moussa Diaby have all been left out by Deschamps ahead of the trip to Germany.

France begin their tournament against Austria on Monday 17th June at 17:00 GMT at the Dusseldorf Arena in Dusseldorf before then facing the Netherlands and Poland in the group stages.

Wow, what a shock from Deschamps! Great to see Kante back in the squad. He's been missed since his injury and will bring some much needed experience to the team. Excited to see Mbappe and Griezmann leading the way as always. Good luck Les Bleus!

Wow, Deschamps taking a big risk with Kante's recall! But with Mbappe and Griezmann still leading the squad, I have high hopes for Les Bleus at EURO 2024. Disappointed for Lucas Hernandez though.
