England women’s manager Sarina Wiegman has confirmed that defender Leah Williamson is back ‘fit and available’ after overcoming an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Williamson suffered the major blow all the way back in April 2023 but, after 12 months, is set to return to play for her country in the upcoming April international break.

Williamson is expected to start against Sweden in the first of England’s UEFA EURO 2025 qualifiers on Friday evening at Wembley Stadium.

The 27-year-old Milton Keynes Dons-born defender has played 43 times for her nation and captain the Lionesses to a UEFA EURO 2022 final victory over Germany at Wembley.

In her career, she has only ever played professionally for Arsenal with 230 appearances for the Gunners, winning one league title, two FA Cups and three League Cups.

England, as mentioned, kick off their qualifying campaign against Sweden before then facing Ireland on Tuesday at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. France make up the rest of a tough League A Group 3.

As a football fan, I'm so relieved to hear that Leah Williamson is finally back and available for England! It's been a long road to recovery from her ACL injury, but I have no doubt she'll come back stronger. Can't wait to see her start against Sweden in the upcoming qualifiers.
