Leeds run riot against Norwich

E4

It was a combination of an absolutely excellent performance from Leeds United and pretty pathetic capitulation by Norwich City that saw Leeds run riot at Elland Road to move into the Championship playoff final.

LINEUPS

LEE XI: Meslier; Gray, Rodon, Ampadu*, Junior Firpo; Gruev, Kamara; Gnonto, Rutter, Summerville; Piroe

LEE SUBS: Darlow, Cresswell, Cooper, Roberts, Shackleton, Mateo Joseph, James, Anthony, Gelhardt

NOR XI: Gunn; Stacey, Duffy, Gibson, Giannoulis; Marcelino Nunez, McLean; Sara, Barnes, Rowe; Sargent

NOR SUBS: Long, Fisher, Hanley, Batth, McCallum, Sorensen, Fassnacht, Borja Sainz, Van Hooijdonk

Action: From the off at Elland Road, it was a really fast start for Leeds United with all of their attacking players and even Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara intensely squeezing the Norwich City defence.

Leeds’ key man and arguably the best player in the second-tier, Crysencio Summerville, had a chance early on that he wildly blazed over the bar but it was very much a warning sign for the Canaries’ defence.

Leeds didn’t take too much longer to get themselves ahead, though. Summerville ran over the ball as a decoy from a set-piece that appeared destined to be crossed by Gruev but the Bulgarian instead whipped hard into the near post past Angus Gunn.

With Norwich trying to find their feet, it was soon 2-0. Willy Gnonto moved forward with the ball before seemingly overhitting a cross very deep to the back post. Joel Piroe took advantage of some bizarre hesitation from Gunn and headed into what was more or less an empty net for the hosts.

Within a few minutes of that, Norwich had a glorious opportunity to get themselves back in the tie when United States international Josh Sargent raced through but his tame finish was easily smothered by Ilan Meslier.

Norwich began to steady themselves and played themselves into the game with but the likes of Gabriel Sara and Marcelino Nunez were noticeable unnoticeable even as they improved.

Then, almost out of nothing, it was three. Joel Piroe’s driving burst down the left allowed him to get into a position to cross and the ball eventually found its way to the on-rushing Georginio Rutter, who hammered high into the roof of Gunn’s net.

Leeds then had two great chances to really put the tie to bed when Willy Gnonto went through but could only hit straight at Gunn before some poor goalkeeping led to the ball at Rutter’s feet inside the six-yard box but some good defending from both Dimitris Giannoulis and Jonathan Rowe saved the visitors from conceding a fourth as they scrambled the ball behind for a corner.

There was an apparent improvement coming from the visitors early on in the second-half when Gabriel Sara and Jonathan Rowe were able to finally maraud forward but that flurry didn’t last long.

Just a few minutes into the second-half it took before Summerville found himself in space in the box once more, forcing a good save by Gunn to push behind for a corner.

Leeds then began slicing Norwich apart with Summerville drifting into the box again before setting up Joel Piroe but his rushed finish was easily beaten away once again by Gunn.

Then, with Norwich having already accepted their fate almost from minute one, there was a fourth. Willy Gnonto rifled in from the edge of the box for Angus Gunn to palm away but Piroe was first to it and he crossed for Summerville to slam home.

Leeds decided to rest players for the final 20 minutes in a luxurious position and Norwich could still get nowhere near their former manager Daniel Farke and his team with Leeds cruising into the playoff final – on the same weekend where Manchester United and Manchester City will face each other in the FA Cup final.

The big picture: Leeds United are into the Championship playoff final for the first time ever. They crumbled towards the end of the season and collected just eight points from eight games but they have got themselves back on track just in the nick of time. They will face Southampton or West Bromwich Albion at Wembley Stadium. The Canaries will go back to the drawing board for the summer with quite a few things, including David Wagner’s future, up for discussion.

Man of the match: Crysencio Summerville. It took the Dutchman until the second-half to notch but he was simply mesmeric throughout and the Norwich’ defenders will be having nightmares of him dribbling at them with sublime control and electric pace for a long time.

As a die-hard Leeds United fan, I have to say that I am absolutely buzzing after that performance! Our boys were on fire and didn't give Norwich City a chance to breathe. I have to give a huge shoutout to our defense, especially Ampadu and Firpo, for keeping Norwich's attack at bay. And can we talk about Piroe's goal Absolute class.

As a Leeds fan, I can't even describe the excitement I felt watching that game. Our team played with such passion and determination, and it was amazing to see them completely dominate against Norwich City. I have high hopes for the playoff final, and I know we can do it if we keep up this level of play.
