France come from behind to win...

Lionesses suffer first Euro qualifier defeat in over two decades

The Lionesses fell to defeat in their first qualifying game for the European Championships after having initially taken the lead against France at St James' Park.

England's start to EURO 2025 qualification got off to the worst possible start when star goalkeeper Mary Earps suffered an injury within the first few minutes of the match.

The Manchester United shot-stopper, who is out of contract at the end of the season, had to be replaced early on with Hannah Hampton taking her place between the sticks.

Despite the less-than-ideal start, it was the Lionesses who took the lead on the half-hour mark when Lauren Hemp's cut-back from the left eventually found Beth Mead at the far post to finish.

However, France equalised shortly before the break after an impressive finish.

Aston Villa's Kenza Dali sent in a corner from the right that Elisa De Almeida expertly diverted into the corner with a fine right-footed finish on the volley.

England came close to retaking the lead just before the break but Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was able to make the save to stop Mead getting on the scoresheet for the second time with a curling effort.

The visitors completed the comeback in the 69th minute again from a corner. This time though, Sarina Wiegman's team had plenty of time to clear the ball but failed to do so allowing France to create another chance with Marie Katoto finishing Hannah Hampton to make it 2-1.

England tried to fight back and earn a late equaliser but eventually fell to defeat by an impressive France side.

That result is England's first defeat in a European Championship qualifier in 23 years – their first defeat in 28 qualifiers.

The Lionesses can get revenge swiftly when the two teams meet again in Saint-Étienne on Tuesday.

Disappointing start for the Lionesses but proud of their fight. Gutted for Mary Earps, hope she recovers quickly. Let's bounce back in the next game!

As a football fan, I can't believe we let that lead slip against France! Gutted for Mary Earps, but Hannah Hampton did well to come on. We need to be more clinical in front of goal.

As a football fan, I'm disappointed with the Lionesses' defeat but I'm proud of their effort in the game. It's unfortunate that Mary Earps got injured early on, but Hannah Hampton stepped up well. Congrats to Beth Mead for her goal though!

As a football fan, I'm disappointed with England's defeat but it's not the end of the world. We showed potential and took the lead, but injuries can happen. Let's stay positive and learn from this for future matches.
