The Reds take the EFL Cup trophy back north again

Liverpool edge past Chelsea at Wembley

2024/02/25 18:00

Jurgen Klopp wins his eighth trophy as Liverpool boss as Virgil van Dijk scores a late winner deep into extra time to give The Reds victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

CHE XI: Petrovic; Gusto, Disasi, Colwill, Chilwell*; Caicedo, Gallagher; Palmer, Gallagher, Sterling; Jackson

CHE SUBS: Bettinelli, Sanchez, Gee, Gilchrist, Chalobah, Tauriainen, Nkunku, Mudryk, Madueke

LIV XI: Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk*, Robertson; Mac Allister, Endo, Gravenberch; Elliott, Gakpo, Luis Diaz

LIV SUBS: Adrian, Quansah, Gomez, Tsimikas, McConnell, Nyoni, Koumas, Clark, Danns

Action: As both sides chases what would be a significant piece of silverware for both, for different reasons, it Chelsea who went closest early on when Conor Gallagher sent in a cross that eventually bundled clear for Cole Palmer to have a left footed effort from around six yards out incredibly well saved by the fast reactions of Caoimhin Kelleher.

Chelsea did then actually have the ball in the net when Raheem Sterling scored but it was deemed that Nicolas Jackson had not beaten the offside trap in the build-up.

In the second-half, Virgil van Dijk thought he had notched the opening goal of the game on an hour mark when he headed home from Andrew Robertson’s free kick. However, it was deemed that Wataru Endo had blocked off Levi Colwill for challenging for the ball and the Japanese international was stood in an offside position so the well placed header was disallowed.

In the final half hour of the match, the two teams continued to trade blows with Chelsea having the better of it and seemingly destined to score late on. Conor Gallagher had two efforts, one saved well by Kelleher and the other curled just over.

He then had an effort he swept against the post from a Cole Palmer cross before a goalmouth scramble in which Chelsea had at least three efforts on goal eventually popped up and into the gloves of Kelleher.

As the game ended up being yet another goalless draw between these two sides in a cup final, the game almost entirely switched on its head with neither side creating much but Liverpool were by far the better team making all the moves onto their opposition.

Then, with just a few minutes of extra-time to go, it was to be captain Virgil van Dijk who once popped up again to glance in a header from a Kostas Tsimikas corner.

The big picture: Liverpool will finish the Jurgen Klopp era with at least one trophy in his final season as they now turn their attention to trying to win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League. This is Klopp’s eighth trophy in charge of the club. Mauricio Pochettino is still without silverware in England and they are languishing in the middle-of-the-table in the Premier League with the former Tottenham Hotspur boss under major pressure for his job now.

Man of the match: Caoimhin Kelleher. Whilst Van Dijk was a colossus at the back and a match winner in attack, in yet another cup final, their Irish stand-in goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, was magnificent and made several match saving saves.

Expected goals: Chelsea (2.33) 0-0 (2.03) Liverpool [AET 0-1]
