A record crowd of 54,115 at the Emirates Stadium saw Liverpool provide a shock result on the opening day of the WSL season with Miri Taylor’s goal giving the visitors the win.
The Gunners were on top for most of the game as to be expected but they faced a stern Reds’ defence that left Alessia Russo isolated in her Arsenal WSL debut. Goalkeeper Rachel Laws was also needed to deny Arsenal.
But Liverpool did threaten when they went forward and were able to recreate their surprise result on the opening day of last season when they defeated Chelsea.
This time it was Miri Taylor’s goal that made the difference early into the second half.
Liverpool’s high press caught Arsenal’s backline out with Missy Bo Kearns eventually pulling the ball back into the danger zone from the byline and Taylor being in the right place to squeeze the ball past Manuela Zinsberger.
Arsenal couldn’t find a way back into the game and eventually suffered a surprise result at home – an early blow for a team expected to challenge for the title this season.
For Liverpool, this was a superb start to the new season as they look to improve on last season and move up the WSL table.
THAT’S HOW TO START A SEASON 💥
