Jean-Louis Gasset replacing Gennaro Gattuso

Marseille set to appoint former Ivory Coast boss

According to Fabrizio Romano, Olympique de Marseille are set to announce the appointment of Jean-Louis Gasset as their new head coach.

The former Ivory Coast manager is due to replace Gennaro Gattuso in the dugout at Stade Velodrome, who was sacked this morning.

The 70-year-old Montpellier-born coach recently began the Africa Cup of Nations in charge of host side Ivory Coast but departed after the group stages when Les Elephants believed they had been knocked out with one win and two defeats.

After his departure, the Ivorians managed to squeeze through as one of the four best third placed teams and then went on a remarkable run to win the trophy under the caretaker management of Emerse Fae.

Gasset has previously managed several teams in France, such as Montpellier Herault, Saint-Etienne and Girondins de Bordeaux as recently as 2021.

He takes charge of Marseille sitting in the middle-of-the-table after they were beaten 1-0 by a ten-man Stade Brest side on Sunday evening thanks to an 88th minute winning goal from Pierre Lees-Melou.

They have managed just two victories in their last 11 matches across all competitions with those two wins coming against bottom-of-the-table Clermont in Ligue 1 and against lower league Thionville Lusitanos in the Coupe de France.

Jean-Louis Gasset’s first game in charge will come on Thursday evening against Shakhtar Donetsk in the knockout playoffs of the UEFA Europa Conference League. The first-leg between the two sides finished 2-2 in Hamburg last week.
