McNeil decider lifts Everton off foot of the table

        2023/12/02 19:42

A Dwight McNeil goal earned Everton a valuable 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, as the Toffees posted their first Premier League points since suffering a 10-point deduction.

The former Burnley winger scored his first goal of the season with a cleanly-hit half volley to move the Merseysiders off the foot of the table to 18th.

Forest's second straight home defeat puts pressure on boss Steve Cooper, whose side have recorded just one win in their last 10 Premier League games.

The Action: Looking to bounce back from defeat to Manchester United last time out, Everton's vociferous support made it clear prior to kick-off that there remains stiff opposition to the Premier League's decision to hit the Toffees with a record sanction.

Against Forest, Everton put in a disciplined and unified display that gives them hope of avoiding the drop this season despite their points penalty.

Before the break, Portuguese striker Beto had the best chance of the encounter, but he blazed over the bar when given a clear shot on goal.

McNeil then had a goal bound effort cleared off the line by Forest's Murillo, as Everton's inability to convert chances into goals threatened to haunt them once more this season.

However, on 67 minutes, McNeil converted clinically to give the Toffees the lead and Dyche's side held on, in large part thanks to a couple of good saves from Jordan Pickford in the latter stages.

        xG: Nottingham Forest (0.83) 0-1 (0.87) Everton
