McTominay's brace sinks Chelsea while Villa stun City

        2023/12/06 22:24

Scott McTominay's brace gave Manchester United a much-needed victory at home to a disappointing Chelsea team while Aston Villa moved up to third after a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

We'll begin at Old Trafford where the Red Devils provided exactly the kind of performance that they needed against the Blues.

United will have felt they should have opened the scoring within the first ten minutes when they earned a penalty after Enzo Fernández arrived late to challenge Anthony.

Robert Sánchez wasn't fazed by Bruno Fernandes' stuttering run-up though and got down to keep out a poor spot kick as Rasmus Hojlund fired the rebound over.

Scott McTominay eventually opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Nicolas Jackson was robbed as he tried to set Chelsea off on a counter attack with Alejandro Garnacho eventually pulling a ball back for Harry Maguire to shoot. The defender's effort was blocked and fell to McTominay who did well to control it with his first touch before firing low into the corner with his second.

Chelsea did pull one back just before half-time though when boyhood United fan Cole Palmer did well to get space under pressure from Victor Lindelöf and pass the ball past André Onana and into the corner of the net.

But the Red Devils remained the better team in the second half and that man McTominay – who had plenty of chances throughout the game – eventually scored what would be the winning goal in the 70th minute.

Alejandro Garnacho's cross from the left was aimed at the back post where Levi Colwill went down far too easily under pressure from the Scotland international who was able to head in from close range.

Mauricio Pochettino's side were off it all evening and couldn't put up a late fightback that leaves them 10th in the Premier League while United, at least until tomorrow, move up to 6th.

Aston Villa's superb home record continued with Unai Emery's side getting a deserved 1-0 win over defending champions Manchester City.

The big moment of the game came in the 74th minute when Leon Bailey's shot took a big deflection that left Ederson unable to get in the way. It's a result that moves the Lions into third and above the Citizens in the table.

In the earlier games, Chris Wilder wasn't able to get off to a winning start with Sheffield United – although no one will realistically have expected him to at home to Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk put the visitors ahead at Bramall Lane when Virgil van Dijk guided Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner home in the 37th minute. Liverpool were made to work for the win which wasn't wrapped up until Dominik Szoboszlai struck in stoppage time.

Things aren't looking too great for Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest right now with his Nottingham Forest side on the receiving end of a 5-0 thumping at Craven Cottage.

Raúl Jiménez and Alex Iwobi both got braces for Fulham with Tom Cairney adding further gloss to the scoreline.

Teenager Jack Hinshelwood was the match-winner for Brighton & Hove Albion at home to Brentford. The visitors had taken the lead when Bryan Mbeumo converted a penalty.

But the Seagulls fought back with Pascal Gross equalising before providing the assist for the winner when his cross from the left was headed in by the Brighton youngster.

Finally, Bournemouth continued their recent good form by recording their third victory in four games.

Marcos Senesi and Kieffer Moore were both on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win that leaves Crystal Palace with just one win in their last eight games.

His effort was blocked, but it fell kindly for McTominay who fired a shot into the roof of the net from close range.

McTominay was there to get the final touch and put his side ahead.
