Murphy is top English assist merchant

In the hunt for a Champions League spot this term, Newcastle have clicked into top form at exactly the right time - and winger Jacob Murphy is absolutely flying at the moment.

The 30-year-old scored and assisted in the Magpies' 5-0 home win over Crystal Palace last night to lift Newcastle up to third in the Premier League table and he has now been involved in a whopping 19 top flight goals this season, with eight goals and 11 assists.

There are growing calls for Murphy to potentially receive an England call-up from new Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel, and his impressive numbers this term certainly make a strong case for his inclusion.

In fact, in terms of assists, Murphy is out on his own among his compatriots across Europe this season - the winger now clear of Arsenal's Bukayo Saka (10 assists), who is the only other English player to reach double figures for assists across Uefa's 'Top 5' leagues so far in 2024/25.

Next up, Newcastle face a tough trip to Unai Emery's Aston Villa, but the Magpies' thumping win last night, on the back of a 4-1 romp against Manchester United last weekend, suggest this season's Carabao Cup winners will be hard to stop between now and the end of the season.
