Chelsea took a significant step towards qualifying for European competition again with their fourth consecutive Premier League win, after a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

The visitors started the match brightly, with Noni Madueke's early effort testing Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

However, the Seagulls also threatened, as Simon Adingra narrowly missed connecting with a Tariq Lamptey cross.

Chelsea appeared to win a penalty in the 16th minute when Facundo Buonanotte fouled Marc Cucurella, but VAR intervened, overturning the decision after referee Michael Salisbury reviewed the footage.

The Blues were better and managed to take a lead in the 34th minute, when Cole Palmer expertly heading a Cucurella cross into the back of the net for his 22nd Premier League goal of the campaign.

Pascal Gross missed a clear chance to equalise early in the second half, before the London side doubled their lead through Christopher Nkunku's precise finish in the 64th minute, courtesy of a superb cross from Malo Gusto.

As Mauricio Pochettino's men were cruising to a routine win, Reece James received a late red card for a kick on João Pedro in the 88th minute.

Roberto De Zerbi's men managed to pull one back in added time through Danny Welbeck, but it was enough and Chelsea secured a crucial victory.

This win lifted them above Newcastle into sixth place in the table, sitting them just three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Brighton will face Manchester United on the final matchday of the Premier League season.
