Greek side strike late to lift Conference League

Olympiacos make history in Athens

2024/05/29 23:16

Ayoub El Kaabi headed Olympiacos to Europa Conference League glory on home turf in a cagey final.

Neutrals may have expected a more entertaining game after a thrilling opening 20 minutes between Olympiacos and Fiorentina.

The Italian side almost took a lead within the first two minutes Cristiano Biraghi sent in a ball that Nikola Milenković cleverly diverted into the net however the Serbian was offside with VAR intervening.

Fiorentina then had another good chance when Giacomo Bonaventura had a chance to fire a shot that was far too easy for Kostas Tzolakis to save.

However, from that point onwards it was a cagey game of few chances with Fiorentina generally having more of the play but in truth creating little of note.

Indeed there was little proper goalmouth action until extra-time when the game woke up once again.

With just 10 minutes to go, substitute Jonathan Ikoné could well have had his side ahead if he had made better contact with Tzolakis able to get in the way.

Vincenzo Italiano's team went on to rue that and their early missed chances in the 116th minute when Olympiacos took the lead as the game opened up at last.

Santiago Hezze's cross was nodded in by Ayoub El Kaabi for the prolific Moroccan's 33rd goal of the season which sparked mad scenes in the OPAP Arena.

There was tension though as VAR took its time – three minutes to be exact – to check El Kaabi's goal for a potential offside and a potential foul in the build-up before Olympiacos got to celebrate for a second time when the goal was confirmed.

Fiorentina had just the remainder of stoppage time on top of extra-time to get back into the game and avoid a second Europa Conference League final defeat. But Olympiacos were able to stand firm and create history and win their major European honour on home turf.

xG: Olympiacos 0.64 (1-0) 1.03 Fiorentina

As a football fan, I have to say I was disappointed with the overall tone of the final. It started off promising with a quick pace and chances for both teams, but then it just became a dull, cagey affair. I was hoping for more excitement and goals, but instead it was a game of few chances and little creativity. It's a shame that the final of a European competition ended up being so lackluster. Congratulations to Olympiacos for their win, but as a

As a Liverpool fan, I have to say that I was disappointed with the overall quality of the game. I was expecting more from both teams in such an important final. However, credit to Olympiacos for their solid defense and for taking advantage of their chances. It's always tough to lose a final, but hopefully Fiorentina will bounce back in the next season. Congrats to Olympiacos on their Europa Conference League victory!

As a die-hard Olympiacos fan, I couldn't be prouder of my team for clinching the Europa Conference League title on our home turf! It may have been a cagey final, but we showed true resilience and determination. And let's not forget that VAR call, how lucky were we!
