Yellows in the second tier after 2-0 win...

Oxford into the Championship after Murphy brace

2024/05/18 18:24

Oxford United have been promoted to the Championship as Josh Murphy's brace downed Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final at Wembley.

It was the Trotters who went into this game as the slight favourites, especially considering they defeated Oxford 5-0 back in March, but they met their match in a U's team who were set up perfectly to stifle their opponents.

Much of the early game was a midfield battle as Des Buckingham's side smothered Bolton and prevented them from creating much of anything going forward.

The Yellows opened the scoring with just over a half hour gone when Josh Murphy cut inside and let loose with a shot that was deflected off the head of Ricardo Santos and into the net.

Murphy made it 2-0 just before halftime, this one initially coming from strong play by Rúben Rodrigues in midfield. Rodrigues then found Murphy with a pass and the forward kept his cool to put the ball past Nathan Baxter.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Bolton had plenty of the ball but could not get through the yellow players who shut them down at every opportunity.

Indeed, Murphy perhaps should have had a hat-trick after having two other big chances on the break.

The first came in the 57th minute when again Oxford won the ball in midfield and quickly found Murphy through on goal but he saw his effort go just wide.

Then from a Bolton corner, Oxford broke again and this time Murphy went too wide allowing Baxter to close the angle and smother the shot.

Throughout the 90 minutes and the additional nine of extra-time Ian Evatt's team continued to struggle in creating any chances with goalkeeper Jamie Cumming having a surprisingly easy afternoon at Wembley.

The U's now are back in the second tier of English football for the first time since the 1998/99 season. Bolton meanwhile will stay in League One for their fourth consecutive year.

Bolton tried to push forward and find a way back into the game, but Oxford were resolute in defence and never looked like conceding.

As a football fan, I couldn't be more thrilled to see my team, Oxford United, get promoted to the Championship! What a performance by Josh Murphy, scoring two goals and leading the team to victory over Bolton Wanderers. Our defence was solid and we never gave them a chance to score. Bring on the next season in the Championship!

Bolton tried to push forward and create chances, but Oxford United's defense held strong and their counter attacks were always dangerous.

In the end, it was a deserved win for Oxford United, who have now achieved promotion to the Championship after just one season in League One.

Congratulations to Oxford United on their promotion to the Championship! What a performance from the U's, completely shutting down Bolton's attack and capitalizing on their own chances. Well done Josh Murphy, two fantastic goals to seal the win.

Bolton tried to push forward, but Oxford were resolute in defence and held onto their lead to secure promotion to the Championship.

Well done, Oxford! What a match and what a performance from our boys. We were the underdogs but we showed our fighting spirit and came out on top. Josh Murphy was on fire today, and our defence was unbeatable. Can't wait to see what we can do in the Championship.

Oxford were content to sit back and defend their lead, while Bolton struggled to break down their compact defense.

However, the Trotters did manage to pull one back in the 81st minute through Dennis Politic, giving them a glimmer of hope.

But Oxford held on and secured their promotion to the Championship for the 7th time in their history.

As a die-hard Oxford United fan, what a performance from the boys in yellow today! Murphy's two goals were just what we needed

Bolton trying to find a way through the organised Oxford defence, but ultimately failing. Oxford had chances to add to their lead, but in the end the 2-0 scoreline was enough to secure their promotion.

As a fan of Oxford United, I am beyond ecstatic with this result! We have worked hard all season and this win just shows how far we have come as a team. Josh Murphy was fantastic today, his brace really sealed the deal for us. I couldn't be prouder
