Palace suffer big defeat that confirms relegation

Crystal Palace's relegation to the Championship has been confirmed after suffering a heavy 7-1 defeat at home to West Ham United.

The Eagles have known for some time that their season would likely end with them dropping down to the second tier despite brief bright spots throughout the season.

This though was an obvious indication of the difference between established WSL sides and the rest.

Shekiera Martinez opened the scoring with 14 minutes gone in the game before then going on to score three more to make it 4-0 with just over an hour gone.

Viviane Asseyi made it 5-0 before Katie Stengel earned her side a consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 80th minute.

But there was still time for substitute Emma Harries to deepen Palace's humiliation as she added West Ham's sixth and seventh late on to make it 7-1.

The result also underlines West Ham's improvement over the course of the season with Rehanne Skinner's side now closing in on fifth-placed Liverpool.
