Former England defender Phil Jagielka has announced his retirement from the game at the age of 41.

Jagielka has been without a club since the start of the season after being released by Stoke City in the summer.

“All good things come to an end and after just over 800 appearances my playing career is done,” the former Sheffield United man said in an Instagram post.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would get to play football at the highest level for some amazing clubs as well by country. It’s been an absolute honour to step onto the grass for every match and I have so many people to thank for that.”

Jagielka went on to thank players, managers, coaches, staff, fans, and his family for their support in his long career.

Sale-born Jagielka made his debut for the Blades in 2000 before sealing a £4 million move to Everton in 2007. Then in February 2009, he earned his first of 40 England caps in a friendly against Spain.

After a lengthy spell with the Toffees Jagielka returned to Bramall Lane for two more seasons before moving on to Derby County in 2021 and then Stoke City in January 2022.

Jagielka’s final career game took place on 8th May as he played the full 90 minutes as the Potters lost 2-0 away to Watford.

Such a sad day to hear Phil Jagielka has retired from Football. He was an amazing defender and a great servant for both Sheffield United and Everton, and for England. He will be missed.

Sad to see Phil Jagielka hang up his boots. He was a true leader and inspiration to many players throughout his long and illustrious career. A true gentleman and a great ambassador for the game.
