Tigers winger has prowled wing with distinction

Playmaker's EFL 72: #23 Jaden Philogene

Our annual countdown of the best performers across the EFL has crissed and crossed 'The 72', and - with a tricky winger to come - we're now within touching distance of our 'Top 20'.

It's certainly been no easy task, but - just to clarify - our '72' is less a roll call of the best footballers in the EFL and more a tribute to those players who have enjoyed the most memorable seasons while racking up the most impressive stats.

Whatever the criteria, we're confident in our selections of the most outstanding players through the Championship, League One, and League Two and welcome any debate on the subject!

At Number 23, we have an exciting Championship winger whose Rabona goal (or was it an own goal?!) for Hull City this season sent the internet into meltdown.

Number #23: Jaden Philogene (Hull City)

Coming through Aston Villa's youth ranks, Jaden Philogene quickly established himself as a standout talent in the Villans academy and a young English starlet to keep track of.

Loan spells at Stoke City and Cardiff City only served to further highlight his abilities and this season Philogene took the decisive step of joining Hull City in the search for more regular game-time.

The 22-year-old winger's move to the MKM Stadium has since paid off in spades, as he has starred for Liam Rosenior's promotion-chasing Hull City side.

With 31 appearances across all competitions this season, the England youth international has contributed 12 goals and six assists to the Tigers campaign in the second tier and he took the Championship by storm prior to an injury in mid-December.

Upon his return in February, the winger quickly regained his form and made a significant contribution to Hull's promotion push - the seventh-placed Tigers still in with a chance of a bagging a play-off place going into the final day.

The England U21 international's diverse skill-set and ability to operate on either wing make him an attractive prospect for any Premier League club in search of a dynamic winger and - as mentioned - his wonder goal against Rotherham earlier this year showcased his eye for the spectacular.

If you delve a little deeper into Philogene's numbers, they paint the picture of a player with genuine 1v1 ability, who acts as a fantastic outlet for his team.

For instance, only Sunderland's Jack Clarke (3.7) and Leeds' Georginio Rutter (2.9) average more successful dribbles per game than Philogene (2.7) this season in the Championship, while his desire to offer a threat and cause problems is perhaps best underlined by the fact that only Plymouth's Morgan Whittaker (3.6) has averaged more shots-per-game than the 22-year-old (3.5).

His style of play invites opposition fouls, and he has excelled at winning free-kicks for Hull in advanced areas: only Rutter (2.5), Clarke (2.4), and his teammate Fabio Carvalho (2.3) drawing more than Philogene (2.1) per game this season in the Championship (of players with 10+ games).

One of his main strengths this season has been his ability to advance the ball into dangerous areas himself, Philogene ranking fourth for carries into the penalty box (84) in the Championship, while also offering an outlet to his team-mates - the young prospect receiving 331 progressive passes during the campaign to date (the 7th highest number in the division).

European giants such as Ajax and Tottenham have been circling Philogene since the turn of the year, and it seems inevitable that speculation will surround his future this summer regardless of how Hull fare in their promotion quest.

This is a great list! I think you've done a fantastic job at showcasing the top performers in the EFL. As a football fan, I can appreciate the difficult task of trying to narrow down such a talented pool of players. And let's be real, it's always fun to debate and discuss these types of lists. Keep up the good work!

As a football fan, I have to say I'm disappointed to see this player only ranked at number 23. That Rabona goal for Hull City was insane and definitely deserved more recognition.
