Welsh winger excelling in the second tier...

Playmaker's EFL 72: #47 Dan James

2024/04/14 13:38

The 2024 iteration of the 'Playmaker 72' is flying along and we're already into the 'Top 50' players we think have had the best seasons throughout the EFL.

It's certainly been no easy task, but - just to clarify - our '72' is less a roll call of the best footballers in the EFL and more a tribute to those players who have enjoyed the most memorable seasons while racking up the most impressive stats.

Whatever the criteria, we're confident in our selections of the most outstanding players through the Championship, League One, and League Two and welcome any debate on the subject!

Number 47 in our list is a flying Welsh winger who is looking to help his side return once again to the Premier League...

Number 47: Dan James (Leeds United)

2023/24 has been a strange season in some respects for Daniel James. Domestically, this is arguably James' best season of his career but he also had to suffer a penalty shoot-out heartbreak when he missed a crucial spot-kick for Wales against Poland with a place in Euro 2024 on the line.

Of course, it's always unfair to blame a penalty taker in such a high-pressure situation. But James has shown his maturity and has not let that incident affect his stellar season at Leeds United.

Just days after Wales' defeat to Poland, James scored one of the Championship goals of the season when he took advantage of Hull City goalkeeper Ryan Allsop going forward to try and help his side snatch a late equaliser at Elland Road with Leeds 2-1 up.

But Leeds were able to counterattack with Allsop rushing back towards goal, which allowed James to fire a pinpoint shot from a difficult angle to secure a 3-1 victory.

James' stunner against Hull is just one of 13 Championship goals the 26-year-old has scored this season. Only eight other players have managed more this season.

But as a wide man James is needed to create attacks, put in crosses, and set up goals himself – something he has been doing in impressive numbers this season.

As well as his 13 league goals, the Welsh international has provided seven assists giving him a total of 20 direct goal involvements.

That's an impressive number and even more impressive when you look at combined goals and assists per 90 minutes. James has a goals-and-assists/90 score of 0.73, meaning that only Adam Armstrong, Jamie Vardy, and Josh Sargent are more productive per minute than the former Manchester United man.

That tracks with James' crossing stats too: the winger ranks seventh for crosses into the area (18) and fifth for total crosses (208) in the Championship this season.

At this stage of the season we don't know yet if Leeds United will make it back to the top flight but what we do know is that Daniel James is very much a Premier League talent.

After bursting onto the scene with Swansea and earning a big move to Manchester United, the pacey winger has had a stop-start career so far.

Disappointing tone:
Wow, Dan James at number 47 Not sure I agree with this one. He's had a disappointing season at Leeds United and hasn't lived up to his potential.

The Welshman has played a key role in Leeds United's promotion push, but has also found himself in and out of the starting line-up.

Wow, I can't believe Dan James is only number 47 on this list! He's been a crucial player for Leeds United in their push for promotion, but it's been a bit of a rollercoaster season for him. Still, he's definitely been one of the standout players in the EFL this year.

While his team, Leeds United, have had a relatively disappointing campaign, the Welshman has still managed to stand out as one of their top performers.

As a football fan reading an article on Twitter, I would say:

Dan James has been a shining light in an otherwise underwhelming season for Leeds United. His pace and skill on the wing have been a joy to watch.

Sometimes he has been electric, his blistering pace and direct style causing nightmares for defenders. Others, however, he has been frustratingly inconsistent.

As I am a football fan, I would say that Dan James has had a pretty decent season for Leeds United. He's shown flashes of brilliance with his speed and attacking style, but at times he has been a bit inconsistent. However, overall he's been a key player for the team as they look to return to the Premier League. Looking forward to

After a stellar campaign the previous year where he helped his side secure promotion to the Premier League, the Welshman has found himself in and out of the starting line-up at Leeds.

Despite this, James has still managed to make a significant impact when given the chance, scoring crucial goals and providing much-needed assists.

I'm a huge football fan and I have to say, Dan James has been a key player for Leeds United this season. He may not have been a consistent starter, but when he
