#63: Chris Martin (Bristol Rovers)

Prior to the season, all the talk regarding a prolific new striker at Bristol Rovers centred on old boy Jonson Clarke-Harris returning to The Gas from Peterborough.

However, the transfer papers to clinch Clarke-Harris' signature were reportedly submitted late by Rovers and the proposed deal fell through - and free agent Chris Martin was rushed through the door at the Memorial Stadium in late September on a short-term contract.

Rovers fans' understandable disappointment at missing out on 'JCH' has, however, been offset by Martin's fantastic form: the ex-Fulham, Norwich, Bristol City and QPR forward belying his 35 years to score 15 League One goals so far this season.

A goal every two games is a very decent return for the former Scotland international, who scored a Goal of the Season contender with a delightful chip in a 1-1 draw against Stevenage back in October.

What's noticeable when you dig a little deeper into Martin's numbers is how much of an all-round finisher he is: his 15 goals comprising of 11 strikes from open play and four from set-pieces; six with his right foot, four with his left and five with his head.

Solidly mid-table, Rovers are likely to influence the outcome in League One at both ends of the table given that they still have relegation scrappers Cheltenham, Cambridge and Reading to play, as well as promotion hopefuls Bolton and Peterborough.

Only two players (Alfie May and Jamie Reid) have scored a higher percentage of their team's L1 goals this season than Martin (31%) has for The Gas - so keeping him quiet should be a priority for all of the aforementioned sides!

As a football fan, I can't wait for the end of the 2023/24 Championship, League One and League Two campaigns! The promotion and relegation battles are making it so exciting to watch. Can't wait to see who will be the heroes and villains in the remaining games. @Playmaker, love your annual countdown of the EFL's best performers, even though it's always controversial. Just remember, it's all about the stats, not just the players' skills
