Playmaker's Hawk-Eye | #10 Sebastian Szymański

2023/12/01 08:48

From the upper echelons of the European game down to non-league domestic football, Playmaker's 'Hawk-Eye' feature aims to highlight players most fans haven't heard of who are destined to become household names.

Our number 10 has flown somewhat under the radar in recent seasons, but his impressive performances have certainly grabbed our attention. Introducing Sebastian Szymański...

The skilful attacking midfielder came through the ranks at Legia Warsaw, making his senior debut in 2016. Hailed as a potential star for the Polish national team at a very tender age, Szymański initially struggled to make the jump from promising talent to an established top player.

For enthusiasts of English youth football, Szymański might be etched in your memory for an outstanding goal against England U21s at Ashton Gate in 2019.

His 2019 move to Dynamo Moscow seemed astute at the time, given the competitiveness of the Russian league and its reputation as a trampoline to Europe's top leagues. However, after three solid but unspectacular seasons the Ukraine-Russia conflict acted as a catalyst for Szymański moving on from Dynamo - and he secured a loan move to Arne Slot's Feyenoord last season.

At the Dutch club, Szymański seized his opportunity and emerged as a key player in their title-winning campaign last season. He contributed significantly with 10 goals and seven assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

A return to Dynamo Moscow was on the cards at the end of his loan, but he ended up completing a rather surprising move to join Fenerbahçe in Turkey.

On closer inspection, it was a smart move from Szymański given Fenerbahçe's expansive recruitment of players, such as Dusan Tadic, Edin Dzeko, Fred, and Michy Batshuayi, in a bid to rival Galatasaray.

With quality around him, Szymański has thrived and clocked up some impressive numbers: notching nine goals and providing nine assists across all competitions so far this season.

The 24-year-old Polish playmaker mainly plays on the right hand side in his opponent's half, where he seamlessly transitions between attacking midfield and right wing.

In terms of his best attributes, Szymański's range of passing and decision-making stand out. His secure passing often breaks the lines of the opposition's midfield and he is able to positively influence games in an attacking sense; in fact, he ranks fifth for most key passes (27) in the Turkish league and leads the division for most long key passes (15).

Szymański's consistent ability to find and exploit pockets of space sets him apart from many high-level footballers. His clear talent for identifying spaces between midfield and defensive lines enhances his capability to progress the ball and create goal-scoring opportunities.

His numbers also clearly illustrate that he is not afraid to shoot! Across the Turkish league, only his team-mate Edin Dzeko (28) and Galatasaray's Mauro Icardi (25) have more shots on target than the Polish player (16).

Capped 30 times already by his country, Szymański (six goals/four assists) has certainly had end product this season and he is currently only behind Icardi (15) and Dzeko (13) in terms of goal involvements in the Turkish top tier.

Defensively, Szymański's contributions add depth to his game. Tasked primarily with creating chances and dominating the attacking third, he also assumes defensive responsibilities and his mobility, aggression and speed allow him to do his share of the dirty work, although he is not the strongest in the air.

Playmaker Verdict

From a very young age, Sebastian Szymański has been earmarked as a stellar talent and a possible heir to Robert Lewandowski as Poland's superstar on the international stage. However, at the age of 24, he still finds himself playing in Turkey - so the big question is: will his obvious talent lead to him joining a top team in one of UEFA's 'Top 5' leagues?

Playmaker would vouch for Szymański's potential to shine on a bigger stage. He has the experience, temperament and skills to contribute at the top level and we would back him to secure a high-profile move in the not-too-distant future.
