Portugal ease past Turkey to move into Last 16

        2024/06/22 18:59

Portugal booked their place in the Euro 2024 last-16 with a game to spare, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Turkey in Dortmund.

Action: Turkey began the game on the front foot and should have taken the lead within the first five minutes.

An excellent sweeping move from left to right ended with Zeki Celik sending a low cross into the six-yard box towards Kerim Akturkoglu, who failed to convert from two yards out.

As it normally happens, Turkey soon regretted that missed opportunity.

After a period of dominance, Portugal took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to Bernardo Silva.

The skillful midfielder scored his first international tournament goal, expertly curling a cut-back from Nuno Mendes into the right corner of the net.

Things went from bad to worse for Vincenzo Montella's side just eight minutes later when a defensive blunder gifted Portugal a second goal.

Samet Akaydin's reckless no-look back pass eluded the on-rushing goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who could not prevent the ball from rolling into his own net.

The Seleção maintained their dominance in the second half, capitalising on further defensive errors from Turkey to make it 3-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo beat the offside trap and broke free before setting up Bruno Fernandes for an easy tap-in.

After the third goal, it was smooth sailing for Portugal, with Turkey rarely threatening Roberto Martinez's side.

Big Picture: With this victory, the Seleção will secure the top spot in Group F with one group stage match remaining, joining Germany and Spain in the last-16 of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Turkey will qualify to the knoxkout rounds if they avoid losing in their next game against the Czech Republic.

The Turks will take on Czechia on Wednesday night, while Portugal will face Georgia simultaneously.

Player of the Match: Pepe. It's almost hard to believe how a 41-year-old man can deliver such outstanding performances on these big stages. Today, Pepe not only broke his own record as the oldest player to play in a Euros game, but he was also arguably the best player on the pitch with important interceptions and tackles.

        xG: Turkey (0.79) 0-3 (2.00) Portugal

Stat of the Day: Cristiano Ronaldo’s assist for Portugal’s third goal was his seventh in the UEFA European Championship, making him the player with the most assists in the history of the tournament.

Wow, what a performance by Portugal! They really showed their dominance and didn't let Turkey have a chance. The goals from Silva and Mendes were top class, and that defensive blunder by Turkey just made it easier for us. On to the next round!
