Real Madrid beat Dortmund to win the Champions League

2024/06/01 22:05

Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior found the net as Real Madrid triumphed over Borussia Dortmund with a 2-0 victory to claim the Champions League title at Wembley.

After an incredible journey to the final, Borussia Dortmund carried the confidence and spirit they used to dominate Real Madrid in the first half.

The first opportunity of the game came from Julian Brandt, whose shot from 12 yards narrowly missed the post.

Midway through the first period, the Yellows had a major chance to take the lead when Mats Hummels delivered a perfect through ball to Karim Adeyemi, who beat Real's offside trap and found himself one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois.

The German forward attempted to dribble around the goalkeeper but took the ball too wide, allowing Dani Carvajal to recover and block the shot.

Just three minutes later, Ian Maatsen made a precise pass to Niclas Füllkrug, who once again beat the offside trap to fire a low shot past Courtois, but it hit the inside of the post and bounced out.

In another attack from the German side, Adeyemi burst into the box and saw his shot parried away by Courtois, landing in the path of Füllkrug, who couldn't generate enough power on his header.

Half-time: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Real Madrid

In the second half, Los Blancos attempted to even out the game and created their first opportunity within the opening minutes.

In his final match for Real Madrid, Toni Kroos struck a fantastic shot, but it was brilliantly saved by Gregor Kobel.

At the hour mark, Adeyemi connected with Füllkrug, but his header was skillfully saved by the Belgian goalkeeper.

Out of nowhere, Real Madrid took the lead in the 74th minute with a beautiful corner from Kroos that found Dani Carvajal's head.

The goal calmed Carlo Ancelotti's men, who then created multiple scoring opportunities. Eduardo Camavinga fired a shot from 25 yards, but Kobel made an outstanding save.

Shortly after, Kroos tested Kobel again with a powerful shot, which the goalkeeper managed to push away. On the resulting corner, Nacho's header was also denied by another brilliant save from Kobel.

However, with seven minutes remaining, Dortmund's keeper could do little when Maatsen played a poor pass that fell to Bellingham, who set up Vinicius Jr. and the Brazilian fired a low shot into the far corner, doubling Real's lead.

Dortmund scored shortly after when Füllkrug headed in from close range, but the flag was raised for offside, and VAR confirmed the decision.

Real Madrid held firm in the final minutes to celebrate their 15th European title and their sixth Champions League victory in the last 11 seasons.
