Romania stun Ukraine with hammering in Munich

2024/06/17 16:04

An excellent and efficient performance from Romania saw them surprisingly hammer the so-called ‘dark horses’ of Ukraine at the Allianz Arena in Munich to kick off Group E of UEFA EURO 2024.

ROU XI: Nita; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu; R. Marin, M. Marin; Man, Stanciu*, Coman; Dragus

ROU SUBS: Moldovan, Tarnovanu, Rus, Racovitan, Mogos, Nedelcearu, Cicaldau, Soresu, Olaru, Hagi, Sut, Birligea, Alibec, Puscas

UKR XI: Lunin; Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matvyenko, Zinchenko; Stepanenko*, Shaparenko; Tsygankov, Sudakov, Mudryk

UKR SUBS: Bushchan, Trubin, Talovierov, Bondar, Svatok, Mykolenko, Tymchyk, Mykhaylichenko, Zubkov, Malinovskiy, Sydorchuk, Yarmolenko, Brazhko, Vanat, Yaremchuk

Action: At a sun soaked Allianz Arena in Munich, we had a fast start to this first Group E clash between Romania and Ukraine with both sounds launching early counter-attacks at each other.

Ukraine perhaps had the better of the opening half an hour but with very few chances or meaningful openings with a resolute Romanian back-line more than content to sit deep and frustrate the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk, Heorhiy Sudakov and Artem Dovbyk.

Then, as Romania began to grow into the game, they took a surprise lead after 29 minutes with arguably the goal of the tournament so far via captain Nicolae Stanciu.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin’s failed clearance was intercepted by Dennis Man and he immediately found Stanciu around 25 yards out and, first time, the Damak attacker struck extremely well into Lunin’s top scorer.

Romania then grew in confidence and finished the half the better of the two sides with Stanciu very nearly notching again direct from a corner kick with his effort catching Lunin off guard and then glancing off the cross-bar.

Ukraine did have a bit of a goalmouth scramble with Mudryk and Oleksandr Zinchenko having blocked efforts but the Romanians, barring a well-judged headed clearance from Radu Dragusin, didn’t really ever have their hearts in their mouth.
Ukraine came out of the traps quite well early on in the second-half but, once again, lacked a clear cut threat and the Romanians, once again, clinically punished them.

A loose ball in the middle of the park eventually rolled to defensive midfielder Razvan Marin and he unleashed a low pile driving effort that zoomed under goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, another mistake from the ‘keeper, to double the Romanians’ lead.

As soon as it was two, they nearly added another when some excellent play again from Stanciu saw him lay the ball off for right-back Andrei Ratiu but his effort was this time denided by Lunin.

It was then soon 3-0, though, when Nicolae Stanciu took a short corner to Dennis Man. Man then jinked his way through the Ukrainian defence before an expert cross was tapped easily in by Denis Dragus and the Ukrainians were very much reeling.

The introduction of national team captain Andriy Yarmolenko ignited a bit more incision in the Ukrainian attack with the former West Ham United winger blazing over when leaning back on the half volley.

Both Artem Dovbyk and Mykhaylo Mudryk had shots that were also blazed over, whilst Roman Yaremchuk looped a ball onto the top of the bar and Sudakov stung the palms of Nita but there was to be no consolation or route back into the game for the Ukrainians.

Man of the match: Nicolae Stanciu. The former Slavia Prague number ten was sensational as he delivered a match-winning performance to give Romania the perfect start to UEFA EURO 2024.

Big picture: Romania would have likely eyed up their final game against Slovakia as their best chance of picking up three points and squeezing through to the Round of 16 but they will now believe they are in the perfect position to progress. Ukraine, on the other hand, will have to come from behind in this group, as they have made a habit of in recent years, and a victory against Slovakia on Friday afternoon is now imperative.

Expected goals: Romania (1.22) 3-0 (0.70) Ukraine

’29 | GOAL: Stanciu (1-0)

’53 | GOAL: R. Marin (2-0)
’58 | GOAL: Dragus (3-0)

However, it was the Romanian team that took their chances and dominated the game with a fantastic display of passing and attacking football. The Ukrainian team struggled to keep up and were unable to break through the solid Romanian defense. As a Romanian fan, I am absolutely ecstatic with this result and am looking forward to the rest of the tournament. Our performance today was top-notch and I have no doubt that we will continue to impress in the upcoming matches.

However, it was Romania who struck first with a goal from Stanciu in the 14th minute. The lead was then doubled in the 22nd minute by Coman, before Dragus added a third in the 29th minute.

Wow, what a dominant performance from Romania! They definitely showed why they shouldn't be underestimated as the so-called 'dark horses'. Completely outplayed Ukraine at every turn.
